Memorial Day Weekend In Review
|
The theme of Memorial Day Weekend and the beginning of our summer season was "A Shabbat of Solidarity" with Israel. Highlights included:
* An emotional Shabbat Dinner with Jimmy Miller and Yossi Schneider, members of the Bibas Family, whose children, Ariel and Kfir, were the two youngest hostages taken on October 7. The sold-out dinner, beautifully presented by W Kosher Events, marked The Hampton Synagogue, via the Miryam Institute, formally "adopting" the Bibas family as a focus of our awareness and activism this summer.
* Shabbat morning, we welcomed Israel's new Consul General in New York, Ambassador Ofir Akunis, who addressed the overflow congregation. Ambassador Akunis spoke of the need to strengthen Jewish identity and community in the Diaspora, which, as Rabbi Schneier responded, has been the singular focus of The Hampton Synagogue - "building better, more educated, prouder, and stronger Jews."
* Seudah Shlishit, we heard from the leadership of Shields of Resilience, a remarkable initiative focusing on the mental health of Israeli combat veterans and reservists returning from the war in Gaza, ensuring their smooth transition back to civilian life and preventing PTSD.
* Sunday morning, Rabbi Schneier launched the 2024 Global Breakfast Forum series, hosting in conversation Michal Cutler-Wunsh, the State of Israel's special envoy for combatting antisemitism. Michal forcefully spoke of the key role of Jewish pride and education in taking on antisemitism wherever it flares up, from college campus protests to biased media.
* Sunday afternoon, Chai Lifeline sponsored a festive Lag B'Omer Family BBQ with live music for the entire community. It was so wonderful to see hundreds of people and, in particular, the synagogue campus overflowing with children, enjoying the afternoon - The Hampton Synagogue - 34 years young. Chai Lifeline presented their critical work supporting children and families impacted by medical crises and trauma, and in solidarity with Israel, children participated in a special art project - making "Bring Them Home" signs for the Bibas Family.
* We formally welcomed Rabbi Sean Jensen, our new Youth & Community Outreach Director. Rabbi Jensen coordinated Junior Congregation at our Camp Shabbat program and hosted activities for youth and teens throughout Shabbat and Saturday night.

See you at Shul! Dune Deck is again very generously providing Saturday shuttle service that makes regular loops around Westhampton Beach [see schedule and stops below - watch for the white Hampton Hopper minibus], connecting Dune Road with the village. This hop-on/hop-off community service will again be available, free of charge, to anyone who wants it. This year, the service is expanded with stops on the "mainland," including the corner of Bayfield Lane and Oneck Road. This service may enable those who find it difficult to walk long distances in the summer heat to attend The Hampton Synagogue, as one of the stops in town is at CVS, just across the street from the synagogue.

Located at Jack’s House, the Manes Art Center of The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach engages members of the greater Hamptons community in high-quality works of art and cultural experiences for the educational and enhancement of all.
The Manes Art center is the gift of our distinguished benefactor, Dr. Harvey Manes, a passionate collector of art for over 40 years. Dr. Manes sits on the Board of the Nassau County Museum of Art and has lent numerous works from his collection to notable museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Heckscher Museum, NCMA, Jewish Museum-NYC, and others.
The quality and breadth of the Manes Art Center collection features an eclectic collection of modern, contemporary, and old master artists, as well as sculptures. Artists in the collection include Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Koons, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, Marc Chagall, Yaacov Agam, Jim Dine, among others.
On permanent view in the Barnet Family Chapel is the work of world-renowned artist, Dale Chihuly, who designed and created the Chapel’s Fiore windows that allow natural light to interact with the space in dynamic harmony, Eternal Light, and the only Menorah of Chihuly’s illustrious career.
