SINGLE-MINDED: Can you live a happy satisfied life, alone?

Let us consider the state of singlehood. Lots of health research indicates that people who live alone have higher health risks and are generally unhappier. Not so, according to Bella DePaulo, author of a new book, Single At Heart.

“I could be living at a time or in a place where the prospects for staying single for life would have been much more daunting. Maybe it would have been nearly impossible for me to support myself financially without a spouse. Maybe attitudes toward single people would have been even more disparaging than they are now. That would have been a profound loss. For people like me who are single at heart, the risk is not what we’ll miss if we do not organize our lives around a romantic partner, but what we’ll miss if we do. We would miss the opportunity to live our most meaningful, fulfilling and psychologically rich lives by living someone else’s version of a good life instead of our own. We would not get to be who we really are.”  Register here.

Distressed Children International

Take Action & Change a Life!

Three years of economic disruption from first the COVID-19 pandemic and now the Ukraine war have had devastating impact on poor countries around the world.

At Distressed Children & Infants International (DCI) we’ve witnessed heart-breaking financial, emotional and physical suffering in our project areas in Bangladesh. Because of this, we need your help now more than ever!

We urge you to open your hearts and join in our charitable mission. There are several easy ways you can help us fight poverty & disease and bring hope to poor children, such as sponsoring a girl or boy, providing financial assistance to our Orphan Support Program, and giving an eye surgery to a visually impaired child. You can learn more about these and other ways to give here.

Take Action:

On behalf of all the children we support in Bangladesh, thank you for your generous support.

Urgent need of iPhone/Smartphones

DCI has an urgent need for iPhone/Smartphones. The educational and communication needs of our supported children in the rural villages and also for our office in Bangladesh.

Phones are proving to be an absolute necessity, but we simply do not have the funds to purchase them ourselves. Our preference would be a 32GB (or 64GB) iPhone 11, 10, 8 or 7, but any smartphone will serve our needs. Would you have any used phones you could donate to DCI?

Please send to the following address:

Attention: Dr. Ehsan Hoque

Distressed Children & Infants Intl. (DCI)

50 Church Street, 5th Floor,

Cambridge, MA 02138

If you would prefer to donate any amount of money to our general fund to help us purchase a smartphone. Please use this link to donate today.

Y2Y

Volunteer at HSHS and Y2Y this Winter!

Sign up with HSHS and Y2Y here!

We are so excited to continue offering hospitality and warmth to our guests this upcoming WINTER. In order to operate our shelters throughout the coldest months of the year, we will need your help between December 21 - January 20.

Over Harvard's Winter Break (12/21 - 1/20), the majority of our regular student volunteers are away from the Cambridge area. As a result, HSHS and Y2Y turn to our community members to help staff our shelters. We love having both individuals and groups sign up for these shifts! If you have any questions, please reach out to Y2Y and/or HSHS with your questions.

Anyone can volunteer with us - no previous shelter experience is necessary.

“Over” and “Next”

by John Schall

Norman Lear died today, at age 101. For those of you that don't know who he is, he was the creator of the sitcoms in the 70s like All In the Family, The Jefferson's, Sanford and Son, Maude, One Day at a Time and many more that were the first to introduce social issues like sexism, racism, homophobia, divorce, single parenting etc into the world of sitcoms. He was very progressive and did a ton of great things in his very long life helping untold numbers of people. He also helped me start and then grow El Jefe's!
