March is Women's History month and we are celebrating chamber-member businesses that are owned or managed by women. To make this happen, we are asking women movers and shakers to give us their perspective by answering three short questions and sending us a picture. Click here to take the survey.

Owner and interior designer. I started my business in November of 2009

A highlight of managing your business:
Owning your own business can really be a highlight of your job, especially after working under or for someone else. Sure, there is definitely more responsibility and worry at times, but it also provides flexibility. I have two high schoolers, and it allows me a chance to see their games, plays, and events they take part in.
A few high points would be:
  • Having my work published in several national and local design magazines.
  • My fantastic staff that works with me in the studio. We are an all-female group here. We work well as a team, and support each other. It would be incredibly difficult to be successful without them.
  • Working with talented contractors and trades in the area as well as some wonderful clients. Developing relationships with people is a great part of the job.

What inspires you?  
I love looking at houses - old, new, in between. I have always had an interest in building and homes, even when young. My great grandfather was a master craftsman and cabinet maker. I grew up appreciating the furniture and home he built using materials from his property. He did a lot of hand carving and inlaying different species of wood into floors and furniture. I love to look at old buildings, focusing on details, and interesting tidbits. That's probably why I appreciate the old cottages in this area so much. I scour design resources for things that spark my creativity, and I love fabric!

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
Believe in yourself, and find a support system (even if it's just one person that's positive) that encourages you to continue on the path you have chosen.
Learn from your mistakes, do your best to rectify, forgive yourself, and move on.
Treat others as you want to be treated, respect and kindness go a long way.
Nikki Law,
Polished on Main
I am the owner and operator of Polished on Main. I opened the salon in November of 2015.

A highlight of managing your business:
The best part is how the salon has grown in the last five years. When I opened, it was just one side of the building with just me doing nails. Now I have both sides of the building, offering not only nails but hair, facials, waxing, lashes and spray tans. There is an amazing group of women who work at the salon with me, and that makes it that much better.
What inspires you?  
This industry as a whole is an incredible inspiration. The way it grows, changes and is forever evolving. Continuing Education classes is how I continue to stay inspired professionally. Being able to be a part of this community is also a huge inspiration - how we can be involved, help and be an active part of the downtown area.

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
The same advice that my grandmother gave me when I told her that I was thinking about opening my own salon: push through every boundary that anyone puts in front of you, and if you do that you will always be successful.

A highlight of managing your organization:
I opened my firm at a young age and was amazed at the support I received from the whole community right off the bat. I am so very grateful for the continuing support of the Harbor Springs business community, as well as the individuals who have provided me with a successful, ever-growing business and career in this beautiful area!
What inspires you?  
I love to hear people's excitement and innovative ideas for starting new businesses or improving their existing businesses or commercial spaces. I'm so inspired by the changes that have occurred and continue to occur in our small corner of the world. We are always on the cutting edge of what's happening and able to adapt to changing circumstances. With all of the adjustments that were necessary in the past year to keep our community safe, our community has not only survived but many businesses have had some of their best years ever by being creative and flexible. Their ingenuity and optimism constantly amazes me, as well as their genuine compassion for others. This really is a community where neighbor helps neighbor!

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
Young women today have so much support from each other as well as from the business community as a whole. The whole infrastructure has changed from the days when I started out.... the banks wouldn't even loan me $2,000 without my parents co-signing for it! Fortunately, our local community bank was able to be a bit more flexible and continues to be so today. It's a great environment to start a new business!

A highlight of managing your organization:
The Harbor Springs Festival of the Book signature event happens the last full weekend in September. During those three days the streets of our town become a celebration of the culture of books. People are everywhere talking about books, talking to people who have written books, and buying books. Festival session discussions continue on the sidewalks, in stores, and over meals. The atmosphere is electric and the excitement is palpable! For me, each of these Festival weekends, since 2016, have been the high point of being involved with this organization.

What inspires you?  
I love working with the Festival's incredible staff, board, and volunteers to create an amazing and well-tuned experience. What inspires me to do this job, and provide leadership to this team is the overwhelmingly positive response about the Festival received from both our presenters, attendees, and business community.
What advice do you have for young women in business today?
No job is too small when it contributes to the mission of the organization. Be the person who will jump in and make it happen. Be confident that those in leadership positions will know who is getting the job done, and if they do not, find another leader. And, always, always, always know there are more questions to ask.
Jody Ewbank,
Stafford’s Pier
General Manager 15 years, 22 years total at Stafford's Pier. My husband was the GM before me.

A highlight of managing your business:
We have had two renovations. The second was the most accepted and most popular amongst our regular guests and first timers to the Pier. We used the concept of placemaking and kept that at the forefront of our minds with our architects and designers. Along with the bricks and mortar transformation, our menu changed, with a new Chef, Robert Sargent, to mostly seafood. As society changed with its casualness, so did the Pier. From our uniforms, to some of our food offerings (still all quality products), all are welcome, and feel comfortable in shorts, or dressy. If people ask, we are resort casual. The last five years have been tremendous; our guests love our food and service, and our tenured employees always have a lot of input. Our team is very unified and are terrific people.
What inspires you?  
Happy guests and happy employees. Employees who are in great moods will pass that along to their guests. Walking and talking in the dining room is my absolute favorite part of my job. If I can fix an issue, to make the experience that much better, I am there. We have many regular guests, and I also enjoy spending time with them. Many times our guests might say “Have the chef just make something for me tonight,” and the chefs have an opportunity to be even more creative, which makes them very happy. They want to and love to satisfy our guests as much as our front of the house crew. We are in the entertainment business.

What advice do you have for young women in business today?
Take it slow. Schooling in hospitality or management is great, but on-the-job training is the ultimate for learning and experience. Don't be afraid of bringing risky ideas to upper management. Pay attention to good managers, those that communicate with the team regularly, and share successes with the entire team. Being on time is being 10 to 15 minutes early. Respect is not handed over with a position, it is earned by your performance, your attitude and your overall desire to succeed in your job position.

Harbor Springs Chamber helps organize 3 new outdoor summer music and movie events

Looking ahead to summer, three new events organized by the chamber have been approved by the City Council to be held in city parks.

TUESDAY NIGHT MOVIES IN THE PARK will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. on July 6 and July 20 in Zorn Park. A+ Entertains is providing the outdoor movie screen and equipment, and the Lyric Theatre will provide popcorn. Three sponsor opportunities are available for Movies in the Park.

FRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC IN THE PARK - The chamber is also organizing this music series on four Friday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Event sponsors for this new event are Stafford's Pier, The New York Restaurant and Reeve Cottage Interiors. Two more sponsor opportunities are available.

LITTLE BAY LIVE! - The chamber is facilitating plans by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra (GLCO) to present a new outdoor performances series at Marina Park on four Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. - July 11 & 25 and Aug. 15 & 29.“Little Bay Live!” is an extension of the online program, Little Bay Concerts, started in spring of 2020 offering online music performances connecting the Orchestra to the community and providing performing opportunities for GLCO musicians during the COVID-19 shut down.
“Little Bay Live!” will feature small ensembles of GLCO musicians performing outdoors for residents and visitors. The goal of this program is to make music accessible to more people of all ages; to present casual, live performances; to bring classical music to people in the communities where they live; and to provide opportunities for GLCO musicians to perform.

Chamber Alliance testifies on behalf of businesses
Kirstie Sieloff, Director of Government Relations for the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance, testified this week in front of the Michigan Senate Labor and Economic Opportunity and MEDC Appropriations Subcommittee on behalf of the Alliance in support of several items we are hopeful will be included in the final version of the Fiscal Year 2022 budget.

The Alliance voiced support for Futures for Frontliners, Reconnect, and Going Pro to educate and train our workforce; funds to continue the tri-share childcare pilot so our employers can play a role in addressing our shortage of quality childcare, and the Michigan Housing and Community Development Program so our communities may implement locally-responsive housing solutions.

The Alliance continues to advocate for budget items that will benefit our rural northern Michigan communities.
Alliance releases 2020 Annual & Q1 Reports

Last week, the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance released its 2020 Annual Report to its member organizations, offering a summary of the coalition’s accomplishments. The Alliance represents the Harbor Springs Chamber and 15 other chambers and economic development organizations and over 7,000 member businesses from all across northern Michigan.
The organization’s annual report recaps their COVID-19 and reopening advocacy in addition to efforts to adopt a new policy platform.

> LIMITED OUTDOOR LIQUOR LICENSES - The Michigan Liquor Control Commission reminds bars and restaurants that the Limited Outdoor Service Area licenses expire on April 30, and urged licensees that want to continue outdoor service to submit this form to convert to a permanent outdoor service area. NOTE: The dates on the form are reflective of the old deadline, but are still being used for the April 30 deadline.
Chamber searching for new office space
The Harbor Springs Chamber has started to search for new office space, and we’re open to suggestions and ideas from our members and the community.

By the end of this year, the chamber will have to move from its current office, which it has shared with the Andrew Blackbird Museum at 368 Main Street, for the past 20 years or so.
In January, 2020, the City Council approved a final two-year lease for the chamber as part of a plan to have the Andrew J. Blackbird Museum fully operational as a visitors attraction. The City plans to begin discussions with the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society to see if an agreement can be reached for their assistance in managing this collection.

The chamber will need an office with space for two staff members, a copy machine, file cabinets and displays of local information and materials. The chamber is open to options that would include sharing office space. If we find a space that is somewhat larger than we need, we are open to partnering with another small office or business that also needs space. Ideally, we would like to be in or close to the downtown, but we are flexible on that option as well.

Stamp your name on a brick at the Gazebo
The Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce needs your help. Our beloved gazebo at the waterfront near the Pier restaurant, is in disrepair.

We are selling stamped bricks to be placed on the walkway to the gazebo to assist with the cost of its repair.
This past summer, even with shortened hours and a shorter season, our Gazebo Guys greeted more than 700 people from all over Michigan and the nation.

We plan to have the bricks placed this spring with a grand reopening in the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022.

Click here to purchase your brick now. Single bricks are $100 (4x8-inches) and double bricks (8x8 inches) are $250. If the certificate is to be a gift mailed to a different address, please make sure to note that address, along with your personal message.   • Frank Beckmann to air last WJR show Friday from Harbor Springs - Details From the Detroit News: Frank Beckmann is ready to say goodbye. He thinks so, at least. "I’m coming to grips with reality," says Beckmann, who will air his final show on Friday after 48 years at WJR-AM (760). Second thoughts or not, Beckmann is hanging up his microphone. Friday's show will air 9 a.m.-noon from the Country Club of Boyne at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs, tying together Beckmann's love of golf, Michigan tourism and broadcasting, the third of which he's been doing since he was hired at WJR on Sept. 11, 1972.

City board and commission meetings at City Hall are now open for in-person meetings. There is a maximum gathering limit of 25 people, and all individuals present must wear a mask and practice social distancing. The City will continue to provide remote participation opportunities for those who cannot attend, or are not comfortable attending, in-person meetings.

City Hall has reopened to the public, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Please consider calling or e-mailing City staff to conduct businesses that does not need to be conducted in person.

Blissfest is cancelled for second straight year
Blissfest Music Organization has made the difficult decision to cancel the annual 2021 music festival for a second straight year due to the pandemic’s ongoing circumstances. The festival dates were July 8, 9, and 10. As disappointing as this is, we feel hope is on the horizon for in-person live music events.
Sarah Reinfelder, Operations Manager, commented: “We want to present a fun and enjoyable event that we all look forward to each year.  Our “Blissters” are what “makes” our festival. We need to make decisions to keep everyone safe. An event this size is always about safety.”

Angie Myers, Blissfest Board President, said the board “has made the heart-wrenching decision to cancel this years’ festival. There are so many factors to consider with this event, and the board approached this consequential decision thoughtfully. Safety, community, and long-term sustainability will remain our focus in 2021. We will celebrate the 40th festival with you in 2022, and what a celebration that will be!”
Chamber collecting canned food for new Friendship Center Dine and Delivery program

The Friendship Center of Harbor Springs mission is to enrich the quality of life and support independence and vitality for all area older adults. Participants have not been able to sit down and have a congregate meal together at the Center since March of 2020 due to Covid 19 restrictions. We have thought of a new way to provide nutritious meals that we bring to them. Our new Dine and Delivery Program reaches out to the older adults in our community by providing them a meal they can prepare themselves.

Friendship Center volunteers will pack and deliver a full meal the participants can enjoy with their family in the comfort of their own home. We could use your help! A canned food drive will be held at the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce office, 368 East Main St. If you would like to donate, we are in need of cans of sweet potatoes and corn.

The Dine and Delivery Program is made possible by a grant from Zonta, healthy produce from Burnette Foods and freezer bags from Cheryl Tallman (Fresh Baby) to keep food safe during deliveries. We are thankful for the volunteers and all who support this wonderful program. We look forward to serving the older adults in our community, thinking of new ways to reach out . . . all while keeping everyone safe.

It’s time for everyone to read “The Removed” for festival's Community Reads program
The Harbor Springs Festival of the Book is proud to announce the One Bay, One Book Community Reads program. The first annual event will take place on Wednesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. EDT on Zoom, and will feature 2018 presenter and National Book Award finalist Brandon Hobson as he discusses his new book, The Removed, with poet and professor of English and American Indian Studies, Margaret Noodin. This event is free, but registration is required. Ski season ends March 31 at Boyne Highlands

Boyne Highlands Resort has announced that Wednesday, March 31st, will be the last day of skiing and riding for the season. Here is the schedule:
  • March 26-27: skiing/riding will be open 9am-6pm (Friday and Saturday)
  • March 28-31: we will be open from 9-4:30. 
  • March 28th: Hotel closes (owner stays allowed)
  • March 28th: Last day of Tubing-Rental-Retail-Adventure (& North Peak ski terrain)
  • March 28th: Last day for Slopeside lounge

Manna resumes food rescue program, accepts food donations after year-long hiatus
Manna Food Project has announced that it will resume its Food Rescue program as well as accept food donations from the public starting April 1. After a year-long suspension, this decision comes after diligently tracking community transmission of the virus.
“Pausing Food Rescue last March was the right thing to do,” says Kim Baker, Executive Director of Manna Food Project. “Although it’s difficult to turn away food donations, we had to take every precaution to protect our staff, volunteers, partners, and food pantry clients.”
The purpose of Manna’s Food Rescue program is to collect donated and surplus food each week from local grocery stores and businesses. These items range from soon-to-expire canned goods, discontinued and overstocked items, day-old breads and baked goods, prepared food from restaurants, and produce naturally being rotated off the shelves, all of which would otherwise go to waste. By diverting this food from the landfill, Manna not only fills hungry bellies but also reduces food waste in the community - about half a million pounds each year, accounting for approximately 25 percent of the food they distribute.
The other 75 percent of the food Manna acquires is through their association with Feeding America and the US Department of Agriculture, along with purchasing from local suppliers. As a Partner Food Bank of Feeding America West Michigan, Manna regularly receives shipments of free and low-cost food from a distribution center near Grand Rapids. They also purchase some items from retailers like Meijer, Burnette Foods, and Sysco.
Once the influx of donated foods came to a halt, Manna was forced to increase these kinds of purchases. As a result, Manna doubled its spending in April 2020 compared to April 2019. “We were lucky to have such generous community support at the time we needed it most,” Baker says.

We will reopen Thursday, April 22nd, at 5 p.m. This Thursday is the last Sushi Night till April 22nd when they reopen. Call early, the sushi goes fast. COCHON - Gourmet Market & Coffee House will be closed for a few days during Spring Break - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, March 30, 31 and April 1. We will be back at it on Friday April 2 as usual.

CTAC and Blissfest present 8 area performers in “Live from Crooked Tree” on March 25

On Thursday, March 25, from 7 - 10 p.m., Crooked Tree Arts Center and Blissfest Music Organization present “Live from Crooked Tree,” a live-stream collaboration as part of the Michigan Music Alliance's “Spread the Music 2021” fundraiser for pandemic musician relief.

“Live from Crooked Tree” is part of a four-day event hosted by local non-profit the Michigan Music Alliance (MMA). From March 24 - 28, the MMA will host a 200-act virtual festival to support the Michigan Artist Relief Fund.

Local musician Mark Blaauw-Hara is set to open and emcee the March 25 event at CTAC. The event’s lineup includes 20-minute sets by the following Northern Michigan musicians: Charlie Millard, Elizabeth Landry, Bruce Smith, Robin Lee Berry, Sean Miller, Caroline Barlow, and Holly Keller-Thompson. “Live from Crooked Tree” will conclude with a rip-roaring 30-minute set with the Distant Stars.

4th of July Art Show applications now available

Harbor Springs Community Schools annual 4th of July Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 4th, at Zorn Park. The art show will feature 80 artists of all media. Thrive 45 plans nonprofit roundtable and networking
Area businesses are being asked to encourage your younger staff to join other young professionals to attend the Thrive 45 Nonprofit Roundtable and Networking Event on April 7th.

This free educational and networking event will help connect young professionals with area nonprofits. Learn about community issues and how you can help support their missions.
This event will take place on an exciting virtual platform called REMO and will allow attendees to interact with a range of nonprofit organizations and clubs in order to learn, become involved, and advocate to support our community. There will also be 30 minutes of networking time to allow attendees to connect.
This free event is taking place on Wednesday, April 7th, from 6pm-7:30pm and registration is required in advance. Wrap-up and networking will take place from 7pm-7:30pm. Register here.
