Happy Birthday

Samuel - Mitya Bykov

Dear Friends,

We extend a heartfelt invitation to individuals globally to join in celebrating the remarkable life of Samuel Bykov, affectionately known as Mitya, a symbol of hope and the youngest Holocaust survivor. Born into the chaos of World War II on April 7, 1940, in Odesa, Ukraine, Mitya's infancy was marred by severe trials. His family endured the horrors of the Bogdanovka death camp, where he witnessed the tragic loss of 29 family members and the mass murder of 56,600 people in just two weeks. However, on December 25, 1941, by a miraculous turn of events, Samuel, his family, and a small group of survivors managed to flee from the brink of death at Bogdanovka.

In 1979, Samuel sought a new life in the United States, where his exceptional skills in mathematics and economics propelled him to noteworthy achievements in finance, fashion, and healthcare. Yet, his most significant contributions transcend his professional accomplishments. Samuel has devoted himself to ensuring that the Holocaust's horrors and its lessons remain a perpetual part of our global consciousness.

As the Chairman of the Holocaust Remembrance Association (HRA) in New York, Samuel has supported thousands, cultivating bridges of understanding and connection between Ukrainian and American communities. His mentorship extends to many students from varied backgrounds, including Bill Tingln, an African American who visited historical sites like Bogdanovka and Babi-Yar, reinforcing the importance of empathy, compassion, respect, inclusion, and tolerance.

As we celebrate Samuel’s birthday today, we commemorate more than just a survivor of the Holocaust; we celebrate a life that is a paragon of justice, hope, resilience, and dignity. Happy Birthday, Samuel. Your incredible life story and unwavering commitment profoundly affirm the human spirit’s ability to surmount adversity, enlighten minds, and uplift hearts. We invite everyone to join in homage to this remarkable man whose legacy encourages us to face challenges, share knowledge, and foster positive transformation in the world."
