Meet the STEM STAR of the month!

Melanie Lobos Torres

This month we're delighted to spotlight the amazing achievements of Melanie Lobos Torres, a true trailblazer to both her school and her community. Through an overwhelming confidence and positivity Melanie is a true attestment to what the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy is all about.

Melanie is an alumna of the 2022 Exelon Foundation STEM Academy and more recently has been involved with the STEM Academy Mentorship Program as well as a STEM Academy Ambassador.

An excerpt from Melanie:

Hi everyone! I'm Melanie Lobos and I’m a freshman at Harper College, currently pursuing my associate in engineering sciences with future plans to transfer into a 4-year university.

As an advocate for all things STEM, I find immense joy in sharing my passion for women in STEM. Originally from Guatemala, I made the decision to move to the U.S without my family in November of 2021. Since then, the endless opportunities here have fueled my deeper involvement in STEM, like attending conferences around the U.S talking about my experience and advocacy.

My journey with the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy began in 2022 as a participant. Now that I am an alumna of the program it has led me to keep being involved as a mentor at the summer academy as well as a mentee in the STEM Academy Mentorship Program. I have also been involved as a STEM Academy Ambassador for the past 2 years. Exelon has been a doorway to fantastic opportunities, including networking events and impactful programs that have built my leadership and public speaking skills.

While at Harper, I have become involved in many extracurriculars. As Vice-President of the Women in Sciences and Engineering Club (WISE) at my community college I partnered up with Girls Who Code! We're gearing up for code challenges and tech events that promise to be both engaging and insightful. Recently I have been working to start a new club at my school with more details to come! I thank the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy for being part of my journey and this is just the beginning. I can't wait to see what the future holds.
