Valentine’s Day is approaching, and we thought it would be fun to share the history of how the holiday started.

Traditionally, Valentine's Day (also called St. Valentine’s Day) is when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts.

But the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February, which celebrated the coming of spring.

At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. Over time, it came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century.

This year - Valentine's Day is celebrated on Sunday, February 14, 2021.
