This week's message:

" You Want Me to

Do What? "

See Previously Recorded Messages

Happy Thursday Dear Church!

Well, I hope that those of you who started back to school this week, did so with gusto and excitement. What a joy it was to bless and pray for our kids and adults as the school year gets underway. I would like to thank everyone who participated in last weekend’s worship gathering. It was a special time. I hope and pray that as you move through life, that you cherish and live into your dreams. As we do this, I believe God works in us in a mysterious way, breaking new ground and making new wine out of us all.

For the rest of these lingering summer weeks, we will focus on some of the Bible stories of our youth, found in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Last week we looked at part of the Joseph sotry. This Sunday we will stay in Genesis and consider one of the most amazing, as well as troubling stories in all of scripture. If you want to get a head start, I encourage you to read through our story, found in Genesis 22.

A week from this Sunday, August 27th, I will be hosting “CCPUCC 101” New Members class following worship. If you have been worshiping with us and would like to become an official member, please join me. If you have any questions about church membership, or the United Church of Christ, this is the perfect time to get those questions answered as you consider your connection to this faith community. What a joy it is to welcome new folks into our community of faith. If you have any preliminary questions, you can call pastor Greg in the church office.

858-748-3304. The meeting will last about an hour. Reception of new members will be on Sunday, September 3rd.

Until Sunday, continue to dream! Remember whose you are, living into the wonder that we know as grace. I love being you pastor.

Holding you close and lifting you high!

Pastor Greg

Music Ministry

Old songs v. New songs

Many churches, and even whole denominations have fought over music in worship. From the words of songs, to the type of instruments you use to the style of the music, such as using syncopation, people have deemed these issues worthy of division and vehemence. To me, the argument is largely moot and not worth such division because scripture makes it pretty clear that the most important thing in worship is our heart and not the manner of our worship. It also has very little to say about particular lyrics or styles when it comes to musical worship.

While it should not be an ecclesiological divider, it can be a helpful conversation of best practice in the area of cultural relevance and ministerial effectiveness rather than theological orthodoxy. I believe the best churches are intergenerational, so I think it can be helpful to do some music that represents the tastes of multiple generations. This is part of why I love pastor Greg’s vision of doing music from various eras in a cohesive manner. Theologically, I love doing old songs because if they are still being sung decades, even centuries, later, it is probably because they have good theological content and have stood the test of time. Those songs that were not as good or just spoke to the moment probably faded out of use. There is also something to singing songs that unite us with the historic church and larger cloud of witnesses across space and time. Still, there is something equally important to me about singing new songs. A church needs to continue to evolve and change and be relevant to the culture it is seeking to minister. This means new styles of music should be explored and used to worship God that will relate to younger generations. Also, scripture tells us to “sing a new song to the Lord” (Psalm 96:1). If we in the UCC do believe that “God is still speaking” than we should be creating and singing new expressions of what God is still speaking to this new generation in language and music that will speak or sing that new word with relevance while also rooting that faith and our worship in the time tested music of our worship as well.

Church members and friends in need:

Float Update and Request

Many thanks go out to Tom and Lynn Amabile who are providing us with the 6 doors we need to construct the main focus of our Poway Rotary Parade float. Now, we could use some folks who can assist us.

1. We need someone with a truck to help us retrieve the doors from the Amabile’s house.

2. We will need folks to help us paint the doors.

3.We need assistance securing a flatbed trailer for the float. You may have one, or maybe could help us with renting one for the day.

4. We need Construction folks who can help us figure out how to secure the doors to the flatbed.

The parade is Saturday, September 9th. That give us less than a month to create the best entry in this year’s parade. “We’ve Got This!”

Looking Ahead to September

Many of you will remember the Sunday we participated in Holy Communion around the table. On September 3rd, the Board of Worship would like to invite you back to the table. We will be celebrating the sacrament around our altar/communion table, 10 folks at a time. It is a lovely way to reflect in a different way this practice that brings us life as we chare it together.

Greetings from Outreach

Our Basket of Hope is ready to help with the hunger needs in our community! This month we are asking for the gift of food to fill our very own CCP Food Cupboard!

The food we collect is then placed in our little libraries for members of our community to take as needed. We also fill grocery bags with everything someone might need,  to help them through a rough spot. Those bags are handed out by the staff to our friends and neighbors who stop by needing help. These bags, filled with love and food, are available for anyone in our congregation too!  If you or anyone you know needs a little help, please stop by the church or ask a member of the Outreach Ministry.

The Pantry needs full restocking. Here are the items in need…

Canned goods=

Tuna, Chicken, Spam, Fruit, Chili, Soups, Vienna Sausage’s, Jars of Spaghetti Sauce

Dry Goods=

Rice, Pasta, Mac& Cheese, Top Ramen, Cup of Soup

Small Size Packaging=

To our amazing church family and friends, we say THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you for your amazing gifts of school supplies for our neighboring children. As always, you gave from your heart and our Basket of Hope overflowed.

It was fun stuffing them full of your gifts and then saying a special prayer for the completed backpacks.

Thank you for making the children feel special and loved to start their school year!
