THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Thursday Church Family!

I sure do hope you are having a terrific week. It appears we have ventured back into winter, but I have hope that spring is on its way. Many thanks to everyone who participated in worship this past Sunday. What a joy it was to have Richard James with us on the piano. Wow … what a gift. His solo at the beginning of, “I Believe” was so beautiful and reminiscent of the “Rat Pack.” It was amazing to me how the songs meaning took on new life. Our new pianist, Michael Pritchard will be back with us Sunday. Please offer him the radical welcome you are known for.

So, you might have wondered, are we going to be in this sermon series on the UCC Statement of Faith forever? The answer … No. However, beginning next Sunday, we will shelve our study through Lent and Holy Week, and pick back up after Easter. We are about halfway through the statement itself. That being said, Lent 2023, begins this coming Wednesday, February 22, 2023. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at noon, on Ash Wednesday (2/22/23), for a light lunch, a small program, communion, and the imposition of ashes. I want to encourage the entire church community to spend about an hour at church that day. Now, I know it is midday and that knocks some of you out due to your work schedules, but if you aren’t working and can be with us in fellowship, I can guarantee it will be worth your time, especially if you have never received the imposition of ashes.

The Sunday after next, March 5th, we will turn our hearts toward the 6 weeks of Lent. This year’s theme is, “The Point of Grace”. Lent is a time of deep introspection, confession, and fasting. It is an ancient practice that seeks to prepare the church for Holy Week and Easter. It is my prayer that as we journey through Lent together, we will find “the point of grace,” in our own lives. I also hope that you use this opportunity to remember those times in your lives when you were at, “the point of grace.” Footnote here … It is the 250 anniversary of the beloved hymn, “Amazing Grace.”

As I close today, my heart is still heavy with the loss of life in Turkey and Syria. The number is reaching 40,000 as of this morning. As crazy as it sounds, my hope has been restored a bit during these days since the earthquake. It is not often that you have survivors, trapped for over 125 hours, come out alive. That, my dear congregation, is a God thing, PURE AND SIMPLE. May all the efforts of rescue/recovery continue to produce this amazing sign of Grace.

Until Sunday, know that you are loved by the same God who is with those workers across the world, pulling people out of the rubble. May you, this week, allow grace to pull you out of the rubble of your own life, to be raised again to new life as we approach this amazing season in the church year. I love being your pastor!

Holding you close and lifting you high!

Pastor Greg

A Message from Pastor Debbie

Hi Dear Ones,

So much going on!

Pastor Greg and I have begun serving communion to congregants who cannot attend church. We want everyone to feel a part of the worship experience. Plus, there is a certain closeness and inclusion in serving communion like this. If you are a person who cannot make it to church, our Care Board plus Pastor Greg and myself are going to be contacting you to see if you want communion. If we have not contacted you, please contact the office or myself.

Lent is my favorite church season of the year. I look forward to the reflection time it invites. Our church’s journey into Lent begins Wednesday, February 22nd. We will serve a light lunch and marking of the ashes.

To assist you on your journey of reflection, we will have devotions on this year’s theme “Grace”. If you are available for a Bible and discussion time, please let me know what works for you.

Don’t forget the last Saturday of February for CCP Hike. We will hike at lake Poway followed by a bring-your-own picnic lunch at 11:30 am.

Our journeys begin…

.Blessings,

Pastor Debb

Be in Prayer for our Siblings in Turkey and Syria

Please be in prayer for our siblings who are attempting to recover from the catastrophic earthquake and aftershocks that hit Turkey and Syria. It is always sobering to see the destruction that results from a strong quake. As we live in a quake-prone zone, may we be in prayer for those family who have lost loved ones, over 6000 at this point.

Saying Goodbye to Our Dear Andy Riggs

Sunday morning we will say goodbye to our Minister of Music, Andy Riggs. Even though Andy has been with us only a short time, the impact he has had on our music ministry will never be forgotten.  There will be a basket in the narthex for those of you who wish to bring a card of thanksgiving to Andy. Thank you, Andy, for leading us in new ways of song and worship!

ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd

Light lunch, Communion and the Imposition of Ashes.

The Beginning of Lent 2023

“The Point of Grace”

It is hard be believe that we are approaching the season of Lent, the 40 days before Easter. A quick footnote here … Sundays are not included in that 40 days. Lent is a season of deep introspection, confession and fasting that prepares us in a mysterious way for Holy Week and Easter. We hope many will join us on Wednesday, February 22nd at 12 noon. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a light lunch, a short program, communion and the imposition of Ashes. This will be a great time to begin our Lenten journey together. It will help our team in food preparation, if you either email us your intention of being at the noontime service or sign-up in the Fellowship Hall during fellowship hour after church on Sunday.

Greetings from Outreach

This month our Basket of Hope will be for Interfaith Community Services in Escondido. At their last gathering, they expressed a great need for children's warm jackets. So of course, the Community Church of Poway is happy to help by sharing our gifts! So, if you are able, please bring a new or gently used toddler to 3rd-grade size jacket to add to the basket in the Narthex.

Help us to bring joy and warmth to our neighbors!

As always, thank you for your amazing support of ALL of our Outreach projects. Sharing your gifts brings God’s love to others❤️

Thank You!

Many Blessings,

The Outreach Ministry
