Prescribed Burn Scheduled for this Weekend
The Oregon Military Department and cooperating Clatsop County Fire
Agencies will conduct a prescribed burn starting Noon this Saturday, June 29
and Noon Sunday, June 30 at Camp Rilea.
Smoke may be visible to the public for a couple of days.
“We take the public’s safety and well-being very seriously,” said Josh Como, City of Gearhart Fire Chief. More than 100 firefighter volunteers will participate in the prescribed burn.
“The Northwest Oregon Wildfire School (NOWS) 2024Rx prescribed burn will reduce fuels and vegetation near a machine gun firing range. During exercises wildfires often occur and this prescribed fire will reduce the opportunity of future uncontrolled fire,“ he said.
Clatsop County Environmental Health has been notified about the upcoming burn. “We encourage people to pay attention to local air quality reports and avoid breathing smoke if they can,” said Lucas Marshall, environmental health supervisor.
Visit AirNow.gov to find out what the air quality is where you are and the steps you can take to protect yourself in smoky areas.

Fire Season and Burn Begins Monday, July 1
Fire Season begins at 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 1 in Clatsop County, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Fire season is declared each year when conditions of fire hazard exist. This declaration affects all lands, both public and private, in Northwest Oregon and joins most other regions of Oregon already in fire season.
In conjunction with county fire chiefs, a county-wide burn ban will be simultaneously in effect on July 1.Open debris burning will not be allowed and burn barrels require a burning permit, which can be obtained through the Oregon Department of Forestry or a local fire department, depending on the location of the residence.
For rural residences using burn barrels, only metal barrels in good condition covered by heavy mesh screens with holes no larger than one-quarter inch are acceptable. A charged water supply and hand tools are required to be on site.

County Fee Schedule Approved by Commissioners
Clatsop County Board of Commissioners adopted the Fiscal Year 24-25 fee schedule.
Clatsop County Departments must charge fees to cover the cost of services as much as possible. That means there may be some adjustments to a fee or new fees. The reasons are:
- A department evaluation of existing fees may show that a fee needs to change to cover the actual cost of providing services
- A new state mandate may require additions or other changes resulting in the County making fee changes
- A department is providing a new service and will have to create a new fee to cover those costs
