How to Dispose Fats, Oils and Grease this Holiday Season
Wishing our community a Happy Thanksgiving! As we prepare to feast, give thanks and enjoy delicious meals, let's keep our pipes happy too.
Did you know fats, oils and grease will clog your pipes and may cause a sewage backup into your home or a sewer spill in the street that goes down the storm drain and into the ocean? Fats, oils and grease will stick to the insides of sewer pipes when washed down the kitchen plumbing system, which can solidify and block pipes.
Here are some quick Dos and Don’ts this holiday season:
- Wipe down greasy pots and pans with a dry paper towel and dispose of it in your organics recycling container.
- Pour cooled fats, oils and grease into a can or a container with a tight lid and dispose of it in the garbage.
- Do not pour fats, oils and grease down the garbage disposal or sink drain
- Do not use hot water to wash the grease down the drain.
If you are using a turkey fryer this holiday season and have a large amount of oil left over, pour the cooled oil into a container and dispose of it in your trash container.
If you have any questions, please contact Public Works at (626) 308-2825.

LA County Rent Relief Program Providing $46.3 Million in Grants to Qualified Landlords
A new program has been announced by the Los Angeles County Consumer & Business Affairs to help qualified landlords who have been impacted by COVID-19-related economic hardships. The Los Angeles County Rent Relief Program will provide over $46 million in direct financial assistance to qualified landlords to help mitigate the negative economic impacts of the pandemic that have left many tenants behind on rent.
The Rent Relief Program will offer grants of up to $30,000 per unit to eligible landlords for expenses dating from April 1, 2022, to the present. The program is specifically designed with a focus on helping small, mom-and-pop landlords who own up to four rental units. Its goal is to reduce tenant evictions due to rent arrears, maintain the viability of small-scale rental businesses, and ensure availability of affordable housing in LA County.
Landlords can apply for the program beginning in mid-December. The application process will be straightforward and applicants will receive free multilingual technical support from community partners to guide them through the process and assist with gathering the necessary documentation.
To receive program updates and be notified when the online application opens, register today at lacountyrentrelief.com.
