Happy Pride Month!

Dear Council District 2,

In the month of June, we celebrate Pride Month and recognize the impact that the LGBTQ+ community has had on history. This includes decades of work to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity by and for members of the community. Did you know in 2023 the City of Chula Vista scored 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Municipal Equality Index? The Office of District 2 is proud to be in a City that actively supports our local LGBTQ+ residents and employees through inclusive laws, policies, and more. In this special issue, we will highlight important local LGBTQ+ resources, community members, and businesses. Keep reading for more!

The City of Chula Vista will mark the celebration of Pride Month with the annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, June 5th at 5PM at Chula Vista City Hall! We invite you to join us and various community leaders in this symbolic event.

Cordially yours in service,

Councilmember Jose Preciado

She is a board member of Equality California and Run Women Run, and a tenured board member of PFLAG and South Bay Pride. Recognized for her contributions, Brenda has been honored with the Shine Bright Award for LGBTQ advocacy by County Board Chair Nora Vargas, along with accolades from two permanent Democratic Party clubs. Most recently, she received the 2024 LGBTQ+ Leader of Influence Award from the San Diego Business Journal.

Beyond awards, Brenda's passion translates into tangible support for LGBTQ+ organizations. As a champion for the South Bay Youth Center on Third Avenue, she spearheaded the establishment of a trans community closet, providing youth with gender-affirming clothing and a sense of belonging. Additionally, Brenda is a steadfast supporter of PFLAG organizations and trans support services.

With her multifaceted efforts, Brenda Aguirre embodies the spirit of Pride Month, advocating for comprehensive equal rights and creating spaces where all LGBTQ+ individuals feel seen, heard, and valued.

In Memoriam: Assistant Chief Phil Collum
