Dear St. Martin's Family,
Happy Pentecost! The Feast of Pentecost occurs fifty days after Easter Sunday. (That's where the "pente" in the name comes from.) On Sunday, we'll celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Twelve Apostles in tongues of fire. The fire of Pentecost recalls the pillar of fire which lead the Israelites through the desert to the Promised Land. Because of the association of fire and Pentecost, it's customary to wear red on this day.
Pentecost is also one of the four days the Book of Common Prayer recommends as being especially appropriate for baptisms. (The other three are Easter, All Saints', and the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, which is always the Sunday after Epiphany.) We are blessed to have seven candidates for holy baptism at St. Martin's. We will baptize as many people in one day as some parishes baptize in a whole year. I don't say this to boast but to help us understand how powerfully God is moving at St. Martin's!
A key component of the baptism service is the congregation's promise to help parents and godparents raise their children in the knowledge and love of God. I invite you to join me at the 10:00 AM service on Sunday as we welcome the newest members into the Body of Christ.
Christ's peace,

SPAN Opportunities for May
SPAN (Serving People Across Neighborhoods) serves our neighbors by helping them through critical or emergency situations. As of March 1, 2023, people receiving federal assistance through SPAN have had their benefits reduced. This makes support of local food pantries more important than ever. St. Martin’s continues our support of SPAN’s mission with a year round collection and monthly theme.
MAY’S SPAN theme is “CELEBRATION”
Please donate shelf stable foods that can be used for celebrating holidays like Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day, graduation or Memorial Day. Such foods would include taco shells, beans, rice, corn, salsa, canned jalapeños, pastas, canned vegetables and fruits, cake and cupcake mixes. Of course we would be appreciative of anything else you would like to donate. Donations can be dropped in the bins marked “SPAN” in the Narthex. Click here for details about SPAN.
