It's Parks and Rec Month, and PLAY Roanoke has the best summer activities for YOU!

Get ready to ditch the couch and soak up the sunshine because July is full of great summer fun! We're celebrating with a jam-packed calendar of FREE events designed to get you moving, grooving, and having a blast.


From Summer Fun at Washington Park to the electrifying Freedom Festival, there's something for everyone. So, dust off your picnic blanket, grab your sneakers, and get ready to explore Roanoke's amazing parks and green spaces. This month is all about enjoying the great outdoors and making memories.

YOUTH ATHLETICS

Registration is open for fall youth athletics with our volunteer recreation club partners. There's plenty of options to get your kid active this upcoming fall, including Cheerleading, Football, and Soccer.


These programs are a great opportunity for your child to be a part of a team, stay active, make friends, and develop important life skills!

FREE MOBILE CAVING EXPERIENCE

This is an experience you don't want to miss. For limited time (July 12/13) you can explore 60-feet of artificial cave passage, get hands-on practice with caving equipment, and marvel at the delicate formations.


This is much more than a mobile cave. Kids rotate through stations including cave rescue practice with a real stretcher, STEM lessons with working cave rescue phones, and energetic games about bat biology.


It is FREE to participate, so bring the whole family!

BE LIKE THE PROS

Experience a national signing day-style photo opportunity and ambiance to showcase your team spirit. This is a fantastic way to launch the upcoming fall sports season for the Northeast & Northwest region!


Kids signing up for flag or tackle football, soccer, or cheerleading through Star City Recreation Club, Williamson Road Rec Club, Fleming Youth Sports Association, or Inner City Athletic Association will enjoy a complimentary meal from Buffalo Wild Wings.

FUN TIMES AT WASHINGTON PARK!

PLAY Roanoke is thrilled to present FREE Summer Fun at Washington Park!


Join us at upper Washington Park where the community can enjoy inflatables every weekday afternoon, accompanied by a variety of pop-up recreation activities all summer long.


On Fridays, there will be a DJ and food available. Keep an eye on our social media for ongoing updates as the recreation programming will change throughout the summer.

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH

Save the date for PLAY-PALOOZA! This event is the best way to celebrate the end of summer. In conjunction with our Summer Fun at Washington Park program we will have bounce houses, food for participants, and a live DJ.


On August 9 from 2 PM to 6 PM, you will have the opportunity to learn about outdoor recreation activities, athletics sports teams, environmental education programs, after school care and more!

ALL PADDLING PROGRAMS

Summer is calling, and it's all about water adventures! Whether you're a seasoned paddler or a beginner, get ready to conquer this summer! Paddling is the perfect way to cool off and create unforgettable memories.

  • Don't miss the epic Summer Floatilla on July 10! This inflatable extravaganza is all about fun in the sun. (No registration needed!)
  • Unwind with a Sunset Kayak Excursion: Glide through the tranquil waters on a magical Sunset Kayak Excursion, offered July 16 and August 22.
  • Yoga + SUP + beautiful location= amazing times! With our SUP Yoga class on July 18 you will experience the ultimate combination of balance and focus in a new setting while still practicing classic yoga poses and techniques.
  • Master the Art of Stand Up Paddleboarding: Join our "Learn to SUP" class on July 30 and become a paddling pro!

SELL YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS!

Our Junk in the Trunk event is back in August, and this time it's your chance to turn your unwanted items into someone else's prize.


We're providing spacious 18ft x 18ft vendor spots (that's two whole parking spaces!) for you to sell your gently used items, collectibles, and anything else that sparks joy (for someone else, that is).

IS HOT OUTSIDE - TIME TO GET IN THE POOL!

Looking for a good way to cool down this summer? Fallon park pool is the place to be! This expansive Olympic-sized swimming facility features multiple swim lanes, dual water slides, and a dedicated diving well. Visitors can also enjoy amenities such as a concession stand, grassy picnic area, and poolside seating.

HELP US BUILD EPIC TRAILS

Join fellow trail enthusiasts, including hikers, bikers, and equestrians, in the conservation efforts for the trails at Carvins Cove. Led by Roanoke Parks and Recreation, these organized workdays aim to preserve our current trails. All required tools will be supplied by Roanoke Parks and Recreation, so just bring along sturdy shoes, water, work gloves, and a positive attitude to contribute to the enhancement and maintenance of the trails in our valley.
