HAPPY NEW YEAR!
On behalf of the Houston Big Game Fishing Club, we would like to wish you a very happy, successful and prosperous 2017!
2016 was an incredible year for the Club! We hosted a tremendously successful banquet and tournament, which we are proud to note led to a donation of $39,715 to the Club's Charitable Program. The contribution funded college scholarships as well as donations to the Ronald McDonald House, The Billfish Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Warrior's Weekend, Turning Point Tournament, Port O'Connor Toy Run, Houston Safe Boating Council and the Club's Fun Fishing Day!
We want to thank our members, donors, corporate sponsors and committee members for your time, your generosity and your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at the Club's upcoming events!

Captain's Corner

Although many of our members are still spending much of their time in the woods and marshes it's starting to look good out there in the gulf for a shot at the Wahoo. It appears that we are already getting some cooler water temps a little earlier this year in upper coast, the areas most targeted for hoos, and the bigger fish usually are the first ones to show up. Hopefully we will have some good weather windows shortly with some good reports to follow! Don't forget to tip your weighmasters and Happy New Year!

The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
This month, as we get into the spooling/make ready season, let's talk about hollow spectra. Although braid gets a bad wrap at times, it definitely has its place in big game fishing. Without question, the biggest advantage of hollow spectra is the elimination of ever needing to tie a knot in it. Spectra is inherently slick and knots do not hold well. One of the reasons manufacturers starting marketing line that actually breaks at 115 lbs as "80 lb" is because in solid spectra when you tie a knot you lose about 30% of breaking strength. With hollow, any connection can be made through splicing and retain 100% strength. Here are some links to various connections useful to us:
All of these connections are actually pretty fast with practice (faster than splicing mono into dacron then serving with floss, although that still has a lot of practicality in big reels), and with the right tools. For serving, instead of using the commercially made wind-on leader jigs, I've had much better luck with the quick-grip clamps made by Irwin and just mounted to a table. Good luck!
