From our Executive Director
Expanding Operations from Robbins to Raeford!
Despite the challenges of 2020, Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills continued its mission uninterrupted…and even expanded operations as we merged with Raeford-Hoke Habitat in January. Although our volunteers were on hold during the spring, our construction staff continued to build, allowing us to complete our eight budgeted homes on time; a blessing to the homeowners who had already invested their 300 (and often more) required sweat equity hours and attended their homeownership courses to purchase their home with a mortgage guaranteed affordable for their family. In a year when a family’s home became even more critical, we were grateful to be able to continue our work.
In addition to new home construction, we were awarded two significant grants to use directly in our repair program, totaling nearly $400,000, and adding a staff member to our construction team. As our Aging In Place Coordinator, Jim Parsons will work directly with homeowner applicants with non-Habitat homeowner repair applicants. He will provide on-site assessment and coordination of the wheelchair ramps, roof replacements and other critical repairs needed in our community to help neighbors age in place safely and affordably. We continued our work in Richmond County, building in Rockingham in the fall, and plan to sell our next home in Hamlet this summer.
Our team is excited about our expanded service area. We have jumped in with both feet to meet Hoke County’s housing needs. After several years of partnership with the volunteer-led affiliate in this area, we agreed to merge to see their vision of expanded service made possible. With a team as qualified and dedicated as we have at our affiliate, we knew we could expand our operation to serve more families in the area. Working with the previous Hoke County Board, we developed relationships and identified opportunities to secure land for our first homes and a location for a future ReStore.
By late summer, we had broken ground on our first home for Karly Laffin and her family. January 12th, 2021 will mark the opening day for our Hoke County ReStore. We are working with the City of Raeford as a partner to carry out a Community Development Block Grant, and are already providing critical repairs to the community.
To say we are excited about the year ahead would be an understatement. With a difficult year behind us, we have big plans for continued growth and look forward to serving more families. We recognize the need for increased opportunities to purchase an affordable home in our community. We are committed to finding creative solutions to building and repairing homes to meet this need.
Your support as a volunteer, donor or ReStore shopper makes it possible for us to dream big – thank you for building with us, and Happy New Year!

It’s a Wrap!
Habitat Ends the Season of Giving on a High Note.
Thank you for your donation during the holidays; we are happy to tell you that we have raised enough money to build an entire Habitat home in 2021! We are re-energized by the donations from our Annual Appeal we see come in from new donors, devoted donors and those who have moved away but still send gifts! Do you ever wonder how we can reach out to so many people? Thanks to our volunteer “Honey-Do” team, we have an in-house production team that keeps the cost down.
Habitat strives to build eight to ten houses every year, and each house costs roughly $70,000 and requires over 2,000 volunteer hours to complete. Our ReStore in Aberdeen recycles gently used household donations and sponsors four houses per year. We rotate the Women Build and the Apostles Build volunteers to build a home. This year, the Apostles Build is building in Robbins. Our Business Build partners build a home every year. This years Buisness Build is currently underway in West Southern Pines. Our signature fundraising event is the Habitat Gala and Auction, April 17th at the Pinehurst Country Club, which raises enough money to build a home and do critical repairs to neighboring houses. We have been fortunate in the past to have companies who have sponsored an entire family. Supporting a Habitat home is an excellent opportunity to build company enthusiasm and culture, not to mention giving back to the community. If you are interested in learning more about the tax-deductible ways to build with Habitat contact Amie Fraley.

Virtual Home Tours and Meetings for HIPS
On December 7th, we welcomed six new Homeowners-in-Progress (HIPS) to the Habitat Program. We had virtual home tours for our new applicants; we held Zoom and Google classes for our current HIPS. We started virtual dedications and learned to do all of our contracts and paperwork remotely.
We don’t see our HIPs in the ReStore or on the construction sites as much as we would like to due to Covid, so we will continue to update the wall in our main office. Our Homeowner Wall allows you to see who you are helping to build a new home for through your generous donations of time, talent, or money.

Thank you for all that you do – from the Home Owners In Progress!

A Big Loss for our Construction Crew
Trailer with Tools Missing
Habitat must supply our volunteers with the right tools for every job. Some tools are donated to our ReStore, but we also purchase tools. We do everything possible to get the best price and to stretch our donated dollar. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago,our trailer stuffed with construction tools was stolen from a build site in Hoke County. Our trailer is white with the Habitat logo on it, if you see it in a suspicious place, call us.
We need your help at every build site! See something, say something and it can be completely anonymous. If you have a tip, tools that you can donate, or would like to make a financial donation to help get us back on our feet, please call our Executive Director, Amie Fraley, at (910) 295-1934.

Hardcore Construction
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are the cornerstone of what we do here. Without wonderful people like you who are dedicated to helping us see our mission through, we would not be able to support our community in such a fantastic way. A few times a year, we get the opportunity to show our appreciation to some of our hardest working volunteers. We call these folks “hardcore volunteers”. Our Hardcores are an elite group of individuals who volunteer with us regularly. Some come out weekly, others several times a week, and others as often as their schedules will allow. These folks come from all walks of life, including military personal (some retired, some still active), dentistry, lawyers, accountants, tattoo artists, therapists, educators and engineers. These people may or may not know anything about building a house when they join us that very first time. Still, as they continue to donate their most prized possession, their time, they learn everything they need to know about building a wonderful home. Eventually, they might even feel like a professional out on the construction site!

Meet our "Trim Crew"
- a few volunteers that specialize in crown molding, cabinetry and trim work
While 2020 has been a challenging year for all, we were not about to let it stop us. We made some small changes to how we do things on the construction site, host our appreciation events and endure great success! As we close the door on 2020 and embark on new adventures in 2021, we challenge you to consider volunteering with us on the construction site and potentially become a hardcore volunteer yourself.
We are always building, and we are always in need of individuals with no particular skills other than a kind heart and a willingness to help change our community. Do you think you have what it takes to be a “Hardcore,” or do you have questions about volunteering?
Please reach out to Christy Brewster at volunteer@sandhillshabitat.org or by phone at 910-295-1934 option 5. We can’t wait to welcome you to the Habitat family!

Great Donations Make Great Auctions!
The Habitat Gala and Auction is our annual signature fundraising event and celebration. We celebrate our mission of building affordable homes for hardworking families who don’t qualify for a traditional mortgage. In years past, the Gala has promptly sold out with 250 of our supporters enjoying a gourmet dinner, a silent and live auction followed by DJ and Dancing. Our goal is to raise $125,000, which will build a home in Moore County and make numerous repairs to the neighboring homes so seniors and disabled homeowners can age in place.
We need your help in making this year’s Gala a smashing success and a fun event for all by providing Silent and Live Auction items that will stir excitement and create a buzz around town! Whether you are an individual who can donate a timeshare or a company that can donate your service, your donation and your brand will be featured on our mobile bidding site, event program, the Habitat website and social media platforms.
This year, our silent auction will be filled with sponsored tool bags! Each tool bag will be stuffed with themed items selected by the business, organization, individual or group that would like to support Habitat’s mission by donating their stuffed tool bag. The actual bags will be provided courtesy of Platinum Pinnacle sponsors, ACE Hardware. Only 25 tool bags will be at the gala – so contact Stacy today to lend a hand. The sponsor of the bag with the highest bid will receive a Habitat ReStore gift certificate and two tickets to next year’s gala!
*Suggested retail value of auction items start at $300.

Testimonial
Sally Brown has been a longtime advocate of Habitat. She has served on the Board and as the Women Build Chair Women. In an unsolicited testimonial, she boasts about how efficient the ReStore was inspecting and pricing donated items. “Everybody knew what they were supposed to do and got it done. Like a well oil machine!” Sally said. She especially had high praise for Krystal Allen, our volunteer coordinator, for her management style and interaction with volunteers and customers. Kudos to Krystal!
