Denver, CO (January 11, 2013) - Denver Zoo served a record 2,065,410 people in 2012 through zoo visits and outreach education programs,  the highest in the zoo's 117-year history. This is the first time Denver Zoo has reached more than 2 million guests.

"Certainly the opening of our groundbreaking new exhibit, Toyota Elephant Passage, played a large role in our 2012 success." says Denver Zoo President/CEO Craig Piper.
Denver Zoo is home to 3,800 animals representing more than 650 species and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). AZA accreditation assures the highest standards of animal care.

A leader in environmental action, Denver Zoo is dedicated to ensuring the safety of the environment in support of all species and is the first U.S. zoo to receive ISO 14001 certification for the entire facility and operations. This international certification ensures the zoo is attaining the highest environmental standards.

Bal Seal Engineering, Pauling Properties, Colorado Springs
CSNA Bal Seal rendering
CSNA design depicts hundreds of Solatube domes atop the new facility

Bal Seal Engineering, a California-based manufacturer of spring-loaded connectors, broke ground in June on a 155,000-square-foot manufacturing plant on Colorado Springs' far north side.

The impressive  $45 million plant
design includes over 400 Solatube tubular daylighting devices, most designed specifically for this project.

Bal Seal has made a strong commitment to their employees in the creation of this state of the art facility.  The integration of daylighting is an important element of the space focused on the comfort and well-being of all employees.

The building design by CSNA Architects currently includes 445 Solatube tubular daylighting devices; many featuring custom-designed diffuse acrylic lenses. 116 of the 290DS models are seamlessly integrated into the Epic Metal EpiCore roof deck and ceiling system.  Tying into the CSNA Architects' design aesthetic are more than 300 custom diffuse acrylic lenses.

Principal architect on the project, Gregory M. Friesen, FAIA of CSNA Architects: "Use of natural light reflects Bal Seal's commitment to operational efficiency and employee comfort.  Nearly 80% of daytime ambient lighting load will be provided by Solatube daylighting devices, which will reduce the need for powered light sources."

Bryan Construction is general contractor for the project.  Scott Bryan, CEO of Bryan Construction, says that this is the company's first project in the Colorado Springs area to be built without blueprints. All construction drawings are stored in computers in the construction trailer on site, and updated daily. Supervisors and others working on the Bal Seal project are equipped with tablet computers they can use to access the plans at any time and get a three-dimensional look at any part of the building.

Bal Seal Engineering expects to hire 210 people to work in the plant following its completion in early 2013.

Solargreen is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this brilliant project.

Current Projects

A partial list of Solargreen projects recently completed and currently under construction:

Silt Library, Garfield County

Celebrated their grand opening in October of last year.  The 7500 sf
building for the new library is more than three times the size of the old library, and features a large meeting room, study rooms, unique children's and teen spaces, a designated computer area, a cozy reading area with a fireplace, a plaza for outdoor reading and events, and almost 4,000 new library items!
Garfield County voters generously passed a measure to allow a 1 mill property tax to build or remodel all 6 libraries in the county.
Along with Silt, the communities of Parachute and Rifle have opened new libraries, and the Newcastle facility has been remodeled since 2010.
Glenwood Springs and Carbondale libraries are slated for completion by mid-2013.
A boon for the local economies, these projects have achieved 75% or more subcontractors from the Western Slope, with over 50% from Garfield County.

Lavenia McCoy Library, Bayfield, CO

This 4,000 square foot expansion project started in July of 2012 and is expected to be complete by early 2013.

Adams 12 Five Star District STEM Launch, Thornton, Colorado

Thornton's Niver Creek Middle School has gone through $5.2 million in improvements over the summer of 2012, reopened last fall as the Adams 12 district's first STEM elementary and intermediate school. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The curriculum includes mostly hands- on experiences in science and technology as well as the arts.  It's a movement receiving support. Tuesday morning, the Morgridge Family Foundation will announce a $400,000 expansion grant for the Colorado STEM teacher training initiative to train more teachers in STEM subjects.

With the second STEM school opening in the fall of 2012, Adams 12 is the only district in the state offering STEM education to K-8 students.

Improvements to the building to create a technology friendly environment included installation 30 Solatube 21" tubular daylighting devices to illuminate classrooms.
STEM Launch is in the local news this week, and daylit classrooms and library are evident in this video:  http://www.9news.com/news/local/article/310470/222/School-Choice-Week-Science-of-STEM

Big Sandy PK-12, Simla, Colorado
The Big Sandy School takes inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape overlaid with local agricultural patterns and grids.

The building is situated at the top of a rolling hill and orients itself to the surrounding topography and views.  This approach results in a building layout integrated with its site. Superimposed on the layout is an ordered, clear, interior design.  The building contains patterns and rhythms that emulate the experience of moving through the rolling eastern plans of Colorado.  Follow  progress on the design and construction of this new rural Colorado school.

Holly PK-12

The tiny community of Holly has survived devastating tornadoes and long dry seasons. In 2010, Holly chose RTA to Master Plan and design their brand new school facility. The new state-of-the-art school building has a focus on sustainability and will feature energy efficient systems, classrooms conducive to learning, and will include 66 Solatube Tubular daylighting devices.  Many of the tubes will run through multiple stories - with some runs up to 50 feet in length.

The project is targeting a LEED Gold certification, and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2013.
