Join us in Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.!

Martin Luther
King
Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day of remembering an incredible individual and movement. Born January 15th, 1929, MLK Jr. helped lead the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's. Amongst other well-known leaders of the civil rights movement, such as Rosa Parks and Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. shined, as he organized the first major protest of the movement and continued planning protests while having extremely impactful speeches. As a strong leader and orator, he helped guide the movement and give a voice to those who so yearned for it. Unfortunately, MLK Jr. never got to see the process through, but his impact on history will always be remembered on this federal holiday.

Learn more about the holiday in the first line of links above, while finding events and volunteer opportunities in the second line of links.

The impressive amount of volunteer opportunities that take place on MLK Jr. Day can be attributed to the holiday becoming a National Day of Service. This all occurred in 1994 and AmeriCorps refers to the holiday as a "Day on, not a day off". Find a volunteer opportunity in the links provided above. If you want to help support your local Whitemarsh Community, one way to do so is to donate clothing you no longer need to our Clothing Drive Fundraiser. Find more information in the flyer below!
