Today's Gospel

Mt 9:14-15

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,

“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,

but your disciples do not fast?”

Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn

as long as the bridegroom is with them?

The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,

and then they will fast.”

Today's reflection from

How often have we found ourselves comparing ourselves to others?  Sometimes we compare materialistic items such as how many cars one has or if they are new. Other times we compare what others are doing or why we have to do something others do not have to.  Today’s reading speaks to this as the disciples of John ask Jesus why us and not them.

It is important to understand that we do not know what someone may or may not be working through at the time.  Unfortunately, we are not able to walk in another person’s shoes even if we desire to.  Maybe someone is having a bad day or is dealing with the loss of a family member or pet. Maybe they received a bill for foreclosure on their home or do not have food for dinner.  We never know what others are dealing with.  Thus, Christ calls us to be the best version of ourselves, to think through what I can do for others instead of focusing on what I don’t have.

As we move through Lent, let us remember to keep others in our prayers and to ask the Holy Spirit to shine its light upon us.
