 Dudas News and Info.

Our next KDA meeting is Wednesday Sept. 4.

Dinner @ 7:00 P.M.; Speaker @ 8:00 P.M.  Barnaby's, West Chester, PA  Nick Caloyianispresents  "RADFORD ON THE MOVE"

Go over to Barnaby's NOW & get a seat for this show!

The USS Arthur W. Radford is the largest ship ever sunk on the Eastern Seaboard as an artificial reef. She was sunk on August 10, 2011 in approximately 140' of water off the MD-DE coast. She is 563' long with a 55' beam. Weighing in at 9200 tons; her top deck is at 70'. Celebrated underwater cameraman of National Geographic fame, Nick Caloyianis, and his team visited her the day she went down actually securing footage of her slipping beneath the waves. They then dove multiple dives on her immediately following the sinking. Take note:  The vessel was intact. Three weeks later Hurricane Irene hit and it was another six weeks (October 2011) before they could get back out. This time the ship was now split in two below the bridge separated about 165' from the bow. They swam to the stern....it was gone! Seventy-five feet of stern section had migrated across the sand ONE HUNDRED FEET AWAY and it was only a Category 1 storm!!! Fast forward to October 2012 and Hurricane Sandy. With no chance to dive the Radford that fall, they made their next dive in May 2013. Surprise!!! It's BACK! The stern had returned ONE HUNDRED FEET back to the main wreck! Standing over the wreck it was obvious the hurricane had put the bow back where it was and taken the break away! She is now covered stem to stern with marine life: Almost as many MUSSELS as a lady hurricane, many lobsters and thousands of sea bass. Along with some additional slides & animation, Nick will be bringing a short 7-minute film documenting the Radford which he prepared for Beneath the Sea. This includes the sinking footage as well as footage from the Navy yard in Philadelphia.

USS Arthur W. Radford (DD-968) was a Spruance-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She was named for Admiral Arthur W. Radford USN (1896-1973), the first naval officer to hold the title of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She was laid down by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries at Pascagoula, Mississippi and launched on 21 March 1975, sponsored by Mrs. Arthur W. Radford, the widow of the late admiral. She commissioned on 16 April 1977 and decommissioned on 18 March 2003, after serving 26 years

Crystal clear water, scuba diving, open beaches and tropical breezes. Cayman Brac is a Caribbean Island paradise.

This is the infectious flavor of Cayman Brac. Visitors might arrive here all steamed up and stressed, but shortly find their faces relaxed, smiling and arms waving back. A few days later and they initiate the wave.
Most people arriving on "the Brac," as we soon call it, are packing fins, mask and snorkel. With the usual 100+ foot underwater visibility, the underwater scene is a major attraction. Many visitors also have a full complement of scuba diving equipment. The Brac has some of the finest diving on the planet and for an added bonus, Brac boats can zip over to Little Cayman for the Bloody Bay Wall experience. It will take years to get "spoilt" here..

Notable diving attractions are the walls of both the Brac and Little Cayman and the frigate wreck.

A Russian frigate was purchased from Cuba and sunk in 1996 within swimming distance of the north side of the island off the defunct Buccaneer Hotel property. It is perfectly situated for divers of all skill levels. The stern is in shallow water and the deepest section of the bow rests on the sand at about 90fsw.
Fish, large and small, are turning the wreck into home. Divers will consume a lot of compressed air before they've seen it all.
The walls around the two islands are pictures of perfection. Arches, swimthrus, cracks, gorgonia, sponges and fans all compete for a divers attention. Shine a light on the muted blue structures and the reds, yellows, oranges and purples will spin all your color wheels at once..
