Free Trial of Laser in September | |
Lightforce Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy
Do you have a pain that just won't go away?
Low-level laser therapy promotes: central and peripheral neuron repair; suppression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2); enhancement of peripheral endogenous opioids; upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); angiogenesis; collagen synthesis and decorin expression during tendon and ligament repair; reduction in fibrosis, suppression of conduction along unmyelinated C fibers; and inhibition of histamine release.
Low-level laser irradiation can have a positive response for tissues that exhibit microvascular compromise and become anoxic secondary to metabolic injury with resulting microvascular inflammation, oxidative injury, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Lasers of low-intensity initiate analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and biostimulatory effects, resulting in an increase in local microcirculation and increased healing. Increasing microcirculation induces an essential function in the tissue repair process and in pain control. This process allows increases in oxygenation and nutritional supply to tissues. This process allows for the expulsion of metabolic byproducts, which may contribute to pain.
One. is offering a free trial of Deep Tissue Laser for new clients in the month of September.

Healthy Aging Month
September is Healthy Aging Month. Almost 17% of our nation’s population is aged 65 and older which is expected to reach 22% by 2040.
Many studies have examined the health benefits of greenspace for the elderly. A large research study recently published demonstrated the association of natural environments with hospital admissions for Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD), and Parkinson disease (PD). Researchers analyzed first hospitalizations with one of these diagnoses against zip code with regards to greenness, park cover and blue space cover. In evaluating over 61 million medicare beneficiaries (most women and white), they found that greater zip code greenness , but not park or blue space cover, was associated with fewer hospitalizations for ADRD. All of the outdoor conditions, however, were associated with a decrease in PD.
Dennis et al evaluated associations between green infrastructure and chronic morbidity. They found that elderly who lived in areas with greater land-cover diversity, informal greenery and patch size in high income areas were healthier, compared to those who lived in proximity to public parks and recreation land in low-income areas.
A study conducted by Khaledi et al in those isolated in Iran during the pandemic found that personal green spaces (they measured # of indoor houseplants, window view, and balcony or garden with flowers or tree cover) reduced depression and anxiety levels of apartment residents. This would be a potentially important factor in the elderly who may be housebound or have limited ability to spend regular time outdoors.
Multiple other studies have found an association between greenness and physical and mental health, such as one conducted by Liao and Du, who analyzed a longitudinal survey in multiple communities in China, and found that those who lived in cities with greater and higher variety of vegetation had improved sense of self-rated health status, hospitalization, reporting symptoms of physical discomfort and being lost in a bad mood. This effect was more significant for the middle-aged, elderly and low-educated.
Nature Prescriptions for Older Adults
- If you have a balcony, spend a few minutes on it each day and look at any green spaces, birds or other aspects of nature. You might want to write down what you see, sketch the view or just enjoy looking for changing nature scenes. If you go outside in the summer, bring some water with you. If it is in the winter, bundle up.
- If you have access to a window, make a point of opening the shade up each day and spend time exploring outside and searching for nature. Look at the same time every day or different times of the day to see how it differs. If you are able to open your window slightly and it's a nice day, get in some fresh air and smell the outdoors.
- Draw or sketch something you see outdoors, such as a nature scene, bird or animal. Hang it up in your home.
- If you have a computer and printer, print out a favorite nature photo or photos and hang them up - or ask someone else to do it for you.
- Buy a desktop digital frame and include nature photos that rotate regularly.
- Start an indoor garden - even a small one. Or grow a plant or two. You can actually grow plants from vegetable scraps. You just need soil and a container (plastic cup or cup you aren't using).
- If you live in a senior residence, ask the staff if they can start an outdoor garden that you and others can help tend to.

Hot Summer Threatens Efficacy of Mail-Order Medications
The temperatures inside delivery trucks can reach twice the recommended threshold, but federal rules on drug storage conditions do not apply to the booming world of mail-order delivery.
Aug. 13, 2024
Melted capsules. Cloudy insulin. Pills that may no longer work.
Doctors and pharmacists say the scorching temperatures enveloping the country could be endangering people’s health in an unexpected way: by overheating their medications.
Millions of Americans now receive their prescription medications through mail-order shipments, either for convenience or because their health plans require it. But the temperatures inside the cargo areas of delivery trucks can reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, according to drivers — far exceeding the range of 68 to 77 degrees recommended by the national organization that sets standards for drug handling.
Mail-order pharmacies say that their packaging is weather resistant and that they take special precautions when medication “requires specific temperature control.” But in a study published last year, independent pharmaceutical researchers who embedded data-logging thermometers inside simulated shipments found that the packages had spent more than two-thirds of their transit time outside the appropriate temperature range, “regardless of the shipping method, carrier, or season.”
Which medicines should I be concerned about?
Health experts said liquid and aerosolized medications like inhalers are among the most vulnerable to degradation, since heat exposure can trigger fluid evaporation or pressure changes in canisters.
The potency of many other oral medications, including birth control pills and digestive enzymes, can be compromised, too, they warned.
Doctors recommend picking up your prescriptions at a local pharmacy whenever possible during hot summer months, particularly if your medication is liquid or aerosolized.
If you are enrolled in an insurance program that requires using a mail-order pharmacy, ask for an exception during the summer or, at the very least, contact the on-call pharmacist at the mail-order company to get more information about shipping practices and to ask for temperature-controlled packaging. You should do this even if the drug does not require refrigeration.

Metabolism Hack
Regardless of a person’s level of physical activity, too much sitting has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, dementia and more. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study, about 25% of American adults sit for more than eight hours each day. Although sitting is unavoidable, there is something you can do to be active while doing it. The “Soleus Pushup” is a simple seated exercise, backed by research for revving up metabolism.
What is the Soleus Pushup?
This soleus muscle, one of over 600+ in the body, is located in the back of the calf under the gastrocnemius muscle. It is very important for walking and running and it pulls against the force of gravity to keep the body upright. Though only 1% of your body weight, it can do big things to improve the metabolic health in the rest of the body if activated correctly. The soleus pushup activates the muscle differently than when standing or walking. The SPU targets the soleus to increase oxygen consumption while also being resistant to fatigue.
Hamilton's research indicates the soleus pushup's ability to maintain a high oxidative metabolism may be more effective than certain types of exercise and intermittent fasting. When the SPU was tested, the whole-body effects on blood chemistry included a 52% improvement in the excursion of blood glucose (sugar) and 60% less insulin requirement over three hours after ingesting a glucose drink.
How to Perform the Soleus Push Up
Here’s how you can do the soleus pushup while seated:
- Be seated with feet flat on the floor and muscles relaxed.
- Raise the heels while keeping the front of the foot on the floor.
- When the heels are lifted to their maximum range of motion, release the heels passively back down.

Volunteer Opportunity
The Department of Aging and Disabilities Telephone Reassurance Program Seeks Volunteers
The Department of Aging and Disabilities Telephone Reassurance Program is seeking volunteers to make well-check phone calls to residents of Anne Arundel County. Volunteers connect with older adults and individuals with disabilities to help them remain independent in their homes for as long as possible. We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist with telephone calls one or more days each month between 8:00-10:30 a.m. Calls can be made at the volunteer's home. Telephone Reassurance volunteers must complete an application, a criminal background check, and required training.
The Telephone Reassurance Program places daily well-check telephone calls to older adults and adults with disabilities who are living alone in Anne Arundel County. These individuals can count on a friendly telephone call every day of the year. Family members, who may live outside of Anne Arundel County, have the assurance that their loved ones are in daily contact with a Department of Aging and Disabilities volunteer. The program helps individuals maintain their independence and their contact with the outside world. It is also a great way for volunteers to support their community and gain a sense of purpose.
If you are a resident of Anne Arundel County and are interested in volunteering for the Telephone Reassurance Program, call 410-222-4339 for an application. TTY users, please call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1.
