Juneteenth, marks the day in 1865 that troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed enslaved people. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation (the proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free").[1]
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law to recognize the day of freedom as a federal holiday.[2]
Though Juneteenth is on Sunday June 19 2022, this year, the federal holiday will be observed on Monday June 20, 2022.
However you choose to participate in this celebration, embrace the rich culture and history.
Happy Juneteenth!
