Next Sunday, July 14 we're sitting down with our own Bob Greenwald to hear first hand about his recent trip to Israel. His visit included working with Leket Israel, the Israeli national food bank. In Leviticus 19:9-10 we read:

וּֽבְקֻצְרְכֶם֙ אֶת־קְצִ֣יר אַרְצְכֶ֔ם לֹ֧א תְכַלֶּ֛ה פְּאַ֥ת שָׂדְךָ֖ לִקְצֹ֑ר וְלֶ֥קֶט קְצִֽירְךָ֖ לֹ֥א תְלַקֵּֽט׃

When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest.

וְכַרְמְךָ֙ לֹ֣א תְעוֹלֵ֔ל וּפֶ֥רֶט כַּרְמְךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְלַקֵּ֑ט לֶֽעָנִ֤י וְלַגֵּר֙ תַּעֲזֹ֣ב אֹתָ֔ם אֲנִ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

You shall not pick your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I יהוה am your God. 

Gathering the gleanings of the field, the leftovers of the produce, is an obligation for us to provide for the needy. Especially during wartime, when many of those who work in the fields in Israel are serving in the army, volunteers are desperately needed to help. In an email home during his visit Bob wrote: In the afternoon we worked at Leket Israel. This is a non-profit that helps gather produce that is in distress from not being harvested., It's a fascinating group that you can read about online https://www.leket.org/en

We rescued 8500 pounds of fruit and vegetables that will be distributed to over 1900 families in need."

Bob is not only past President of Temple Israel, he also serves on the Board of Directors of the international United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. He'll explain why he went to Israel and hopefully will inspire morfe of us to do the same soon!

Our next World Religions session will be THIS WEDNESDAY, JULY 10 at 2:00 pm at the JCC. Dr. Ibrahim Almecky will speak about Islam. It is a very timely class!
