Our dozens of Board members, too, over the years, have been extremely active and devoted participants in counts all over Virginia.
These counts provide massive information about bird movements, which has been compiled and analyzed by National Audubon (for over 100 years) and eBird.
These Counts need compilers, tally organizers, refreshment-bringers, feeder-watchers and of course, hardy field participants. Hats off to them all.
This fall, we witnessed the beginning of a ”superflight” of migrant species and the Christmas Counts will benefit from exciting species seldom seen. Stunning Evening Grosbeaks are making very rare appearances southward, along with Pine Siskins, Purple Finches, Red Crossbills and Red-breasted Nuthatches (see the photos up top). Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks are also on the move in some areas.
I can’t possibly pick a favorite bird from my participation in Christmas Counts over 40 years, though being with people who care about wildlife is reward enough.
As for covid-19 and its pain, tragedy, and restrictions...bring on 2021! Best wishes to all and as always, thanks to the many generous people who give their time and money to support the Observatory’s wildlife efforts.
May your holidays be safe and healthy … so we can be together in 2021.
PS: I can't miss this final opportunity to ask you to make a year-end, tax deductible donation to CVWO. Many thanks again!
