My husband and I were fortunate to spend a little time on the opposite end of the planet this month….and it really made us think about how important it is to pay attention to every moment.
Reflecting back on all the moments that contributed to making 2023, at HealthAdvocateX we are proud of the progress we made in the lives of people – patients, families, advocates, allied professionals, health care providers -- in educating and inspiring people to take control of their health care journey.
Here are some highlights from 2023:
Heading in our 12th year, we cannot do it alone!

Farewell to Five Retiring Board Members:
Bonnie Bizzell, Cristian Liu, Syreeta Nolan,
Dale Reisner & Kristen Tollini
| 2023 has been a pivotal year for HealthAdvocateX and as we look back to the people who have helped us scale our organization, we are so grateful to long-time Board Members who are retiring off our Board this year! Please join us in thanking: | |
|
Bonnie Bizzell
Bonnie’s contributions have spanned a great deal of work, including her role as Treasurer and on the Executive Committee. She also was the lead for our DEI/IDEA task force where her contributions help us look at issues beyond the narrow focus of the health advocacy community. She took an active role in supporting our annual meetings, using her personal network to help us make connections and participate in end of life work. As treasurer, she helped identify and grow this role to include outside resources to help us scale and maintain compliance.
| |
|
Cristian Liu
We have appreciated Cristian’s business and analytical point of view to help us sharpen our focus on priorities and think about our challenges in new ways. Grateful to Cristian to bring this point of view and through ongoing support externally and through personal resources.
| |
|
Syreeta Nolan
Syreeta has provided our Board and community with insights into the disability community. We have appreciated her participation on DEI/IDEA and other initiatives throughout her last two years, including her input on technology, access and content.
| |
|
Dale Reisner
Dale has applied her competence, compassion and deep insight into what health advocacy means to many aspects of our work throughout the years. She has been in a leader on many fronts professionally. Her ability to translate what is relevant to a general audience helped elevate our organization through Community Conversations, her contributions on the DEI/IDEA task force have helped shape our ongoing focus on diverse audiences and we have appreciated her asking tough (but always good) questions about the direction we are headed and priorities. Thank you for your generous sharing of time, passion, treasure!
| |
Kristen Tollini, MA, LMHC
Kristen Tollini
A huge contributor to shaping the content delivery, especially in the ‘mid years’ of our organization by using her personal network and her daily work in advocacy, she was able to source and shape our annual meeting sessions, webinars and other events. She was able to connect us to impactful, compassionate and well recognized leaders in their fields, especially in some of the areas around wellness, mental health, mindfulness and pain. We also greatly benefitted from her role as Secretary and contributions on the Exec that helped shape our Board Meetings and business.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
OUR COMMITMENT
Approved by the Board September 21, 2022
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
Our mission is to help people transform into active participants and partners in their own health care. To make this possible, we must advocate for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) for all individuals.
We recognize that:
- Racism is a public health issue that impacts various intersections and communities differently.
- Each person is unique and therefore experiences health care differently.
- Every individual deserves health advocacy regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spiritual practice, financial status, education, geography, disability, mental and physical status, age, weight, substance use disorder or other factors.
- Our organization is uniquely positioned to raise awareness on IDEA in health and health care.
We are committed to:
- Raising awareness about the importance of IDEA in health and health advocacy in all aspects of care.
- Expanding diverse representation within our organization, expert presenters, and educational offerings.
- Intentionally messaging our values, sharing IDEA expectations for ourselves, affiliated advocates, and partnering groups.
- Creating space for respectful dialogue about representation, equitable access, and inclusive practices in health care and health advocacy.
- Educating our community and participating in opportunities about IDEA events and exercises to keep these issues in the forefront of our work.
- Implementing systems to ensure IDEA is pervasive in our organization.
We will reflect on our accomplishments with humility and grace. We will recognize our limitations and remain open to what we may not see or realize so that we can improve and or repair any harm.
