Women’s Resource Center Project Groundbreaking

Burdco Incorporated participated in the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the new Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan at 2225 Summit Park Drive. Burdco is honored to have the opportunity to put their Design Build Development Services to work for such an important organization in the greater Petoskey Area.

· For nearly 5 decades the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan has been a trusted leader combating domestic abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, and child sexual assault.

· The new WRCNM facility will feature 14,000 sq ft of campus space, which is an 115% increase from current facilities. Furthermore, the facility will have 2 times the capacity to serve child survivors and a 65% increase in preschool space to accommodate 20 additional students.

· Completion of the project is targeted for early 2025.

NOMAD restaurant in Bay Harbor was the winner of the Sunrise Rotary Best Burger 2024 contest. The sale of burger cards raised $23,000 which will be used to support non-profit groups and organizations in our area.

SCORE Tip of the Mitt Chapter recently honored three outstanding volunteer mentors, retiring after a cumulative 55 years of service to the chapter and to entrepreneurs in the area.

Margo Johnson (Charlevoix) , Herb Carlson (Petoskey) and Bill Collins (Petoskey) have been a mainstay of the mentor base for SCORE in this area for more than 23 years. Together, they have worked with more than 400 aspiring entrepreneurs, helping them to start their businesses in the Tip of the Mitt area. 

 

The Tip of the Mitt SCORE chapter, located in scenic Northern Michigan, was established in 1988. The chapter has many dedicated volunteers who provide free business advice, no-cost business training through webinars and workshops, and contribute to a library of numerous templates and tools.

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council in partnership with Downtown Petoskey, is excited to invite you to the grand opening of The Ruth Tucker Ayers Harris Watershed Discovery Center on Saturday, June 1 from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Watershed Council and adjacent Pennsylvania Park. This fun-for-all-ages opening celebration will include a sturgeon scavenger hunt through downtown Petoskey shops, games, crafts, face painting, hands-on activities, and a chance to meet the new sturgeon and other native species in the new discovery center. All activities are free and open to the public.

Elder Piper Grand Opening Weekend June 7-9.  This marks the start of Elder Piper’s first summer season and summer hours. Friday, June 7: The grand opening is at 4PM with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the taproom at 923 Baxter Street. The brewery will be open until 10PM. Saturday, June 8: open noon-10 PM. However, at 11AM there will be a one-hour yoga class with Melissa. The class is $15 per person and includes a drink token to be used after the class. Spots are limited and participants can register on the brewery’s website. DJ Clark after Dark will spin records 5-8 PM to ease everyone into the evening. Sunday, June 9open 11AM-9PM with live music by Ricky Hill from 3-5 PM.

 

Join the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet for their original, full-length ballet of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory based on the 1971 film. Charlie is one of five international winners in a contest created by the great chocolate maker, Willy Wonka. With the promise of a lifetime supply of chocolate, Wonka puts each contestant to the test of navigating the challenges before them. Since Charlie demonstrates honesty, humility, and kindness, he inherits much, much more than a lifetime supply of chocolate. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be performed June 7 at 7:00 pm and June 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 pm at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center. Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., come to the second annual Lynn Duse Memorial Kids’ Bike Fest at the Little Traverse History Museum. There will be a bike parade from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This is a free event. Parade registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and helmets are required to take part in the parade. There will be free bike safety inspections, free history museum tours, and more. Bring your lawn chairs for the bike parade. There will be prizes for the best decorated bikes. Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra (GLCO) will present Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Camille Saint-Säens’ Organ Symphony on Friday, June 14, 2024 at 7 PM in Bay View.

The performance of these two masterworks and audience favorites is a true community masterpiece, presenting over 120 local artists spanning four generations, and features guest virtuoso organist Kelly Hale. The GLCO Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Libor Ondras, guest vocalists Amy Cross and Thomas Gunther, GLCO Chorus, the Little Traverse Choral Society led by André Strydom, and the Great Lakes Children’s Choir will all join forces. Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) Migizi Aviary is within reach. LTBB was awarded a $250,000 matching grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community as a part of its continued campaign to fund and build the Archie Kiogima Jr. ba Migizi Aviary and Rehabilitation Center. The center will enable tribe to save federally protected eagles and educate public on their importance to Native American culture. The grant will expire in July of 2024, as such LTBB is seeking assistance in helping us achieve enough donations to recoup the award. The care and protection of injured Eagles and other raptors through the construction of top-notch facility on Tribal land nestled within a Northern Michigan is within reach! North Central Michigan College announces the launch of Timberwolves Thrive, a free five-week summer program designed to help students build confidence, sharpen study strategies, and be college-ready by Fall 2024. Timberwolves Thrive offers a comprehensive support system that includes breakfast and lunch provided daily, transportation assistance (up to $175 in gas cards or bus fare), a stipend of up to $25 per day, and all program materials, textbooks, and laptops. Students who finish the program and enroll and attend fall classes at NCMC get to keep the laptop. Program space is limited to ensure students receive personalized support and guidance. Alcona Health Center is currently conducting a Community Needs Assessment.  We are required by the Health Resources & Services Administration to complete both a general community facing survey and a stakeholder version at least once every three years. Response for those in Emmet County has been minimal so far. Big Brothers Big Sisters now has a website dedicated exclusively to their northern Michigan reach. Introducing bigsupnorth.org. Their new website serves as a central hub for information about their organization, their mission, and how to get involved as a mentor, mentee, or supporter. Visitors to the site will be able to learn about the impact of their program, read success stories from matches and find resources for both mentors and mentees.
