Memorial Day Celebration Schedule on May 27th to include an honors ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery in the Veterans Honor Garden at 8:30 am, followed by the Lost at Sea remembrance at 9:30am at Festival Place Shelter. The parade to Pennsylvania Park will begin at 10:30 am from the corner of Mitchell and Emmet Streets up to Mitchell Street and then the park, followed by the program at 11:00 am near the gazebo. Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council in partnership with Downtown Petoskey, is excited to invite you to the grand opening of The Ruth Tucker Ayers Harris Watershed Discovery Center on Saturday, June 1 from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Watershed Council and adjacent Pennsylvania Park. This fun-for-all-ages opening celebration will include a sturgeon scavenger hunt through downtown Petoskey shops, games, crafts, face painting, hands-on activities, and a chance to meet the new sturgeon and other native species in the new discovery center. Join the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet for their original, full-length ballet of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory based on the 1971 film. Charlie is one of five international winners in a contest created by the great chocolate maker, Willy Wonka. With the promise of a lifetime supply of chocolate, Wonka puts each contestant to the test of navigating the challenges before them. Since Charlie demonstrates honesty, humility, and kindness, he inherits much, much more than a lifetime supply of chocolate. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be performed June 7 at 7:00 pm and June 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 pm at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center. Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., come to the second annual Lynn Duse Memorial Kids’ Bike Fest at the Little Traverse History Museum. There will be a bike parade from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This is a free event. Parade registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and helmets are required to take part in the parade. There will be free bike safety inspections, free history museum tours, and more. Bring your lawn chairs for the bike parade. There will be prizes for the best decorated bikes. The Petoskey Area Garden Club is celebrating its 90th anniversary on June 24 at the Petoskey – Bay View Country Club beginning at 5:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this celebration and fundraiser. Proceeds will go toward a new city garden in Arlington Park. Tickets are $75 per person and include a variety of hearty hors d’oeuvres with a cash bar along with live music and auction items. William Santos, owner of Monarch Garden & Floral Design, will do a live demonstration of fabulous floral arrangements for the live auction while an array of attractive packages will be available to bid on in the silent auction. Help them celebrate this historic milestone. Thursday, June 27 is Little Traverse Bay Humane Society’s 3rd annual Putts Fore Paws event, and they are looking for golfers and sponsors. They are back at Birchwood Farms, and there will be scramble style golf, exciting prizes, contests, lunch, and a silent auction benefiting Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. The Petoskey District Library is recruiting volunteer “human books” for their Human Library event on Saturday, August 3, 2024. If you are someone who has experienced discrimination, disadvantage, hardship, or prejudice and you are willing to share your story and have an honest one-on-one conversation, you could become a “human book” for readers to check out. You must be 18 or older, have processed any trauma, and be at least 2 years from resolving any conflict or addiction. If you are interested, contact one of the Marys at 231-758-3114, mbeauchamp@petoskeylibrary.org, mhohlbein@petoskeylibrary.org, or fill out the form here to set up an interview. If you choose to be a “human book”, you will receive training through the Human Library to ensure a safe and productive event.


Child Care Solutions Showcase Offers a Regional Plan of Action. A new plan offering practical solutions to childcare challenges in northwest Lower Michigan will be presented at a Child Care Solutions Showcase scheduled for multiple locations in the region during the month of May. Four options are available for attending the Child Care Solutions Showcase. Live, in-person events will be held May 21 in Traverse City, May 22 in Cadillac, and May 29 in Petoskey. There will also be a regional virtual option via Zoom on May 28. Business leaders, government officials, community leaders, and anyone else seeking to improve our childcare system are encouraged to attend.
