How to Use Moon Energy to Enhance Creative Flow
~Nanette Saylor
Years ago I began noticing that when January 1st rolled around I wasn’t feeling a surge of energy to start the New Year with a bang. I felt more inclined to hibernate, to rest and reflect on the previous year, and to slowly let my intentions for the New Year come into clarity. For a while, I thought there was something wrong with me, or that I was just “in a slump”, or that I was being lazy or resistant to productivity.
As I began embracing a “make my own rules” creative lifestyle, I learned that nothing could be further from the truth!
Having always lived in the Northern Hemisphere, I came to appreciate that my lack of energy was perfectly normal and aligned with the natural rhythm of the seasons - Winter, in particular. This is not the time jump into action. Winter is the time many mammals hibernate. No wonder I always felt like I was fighting against the tide when I tried to force new things into being in the first two months of the year. Have you ever tried to plant a seed in frozen earth?! Winter is the time to clear out anything leftover from the previous season, establish a foundation and to set clear intentions. It’s been a number of years now that I have been following this cycle to enhance my creative flow. I gently and slowly awaken to utilize my full creative capacity as we approach the Spring Equinox.
Last year, I began following the 28 day lunar cycles more closely, too. I see that the dark New Moon days are the equivalent to “winter” - the days in the cycle best for setting intentions. As the moon grows brighter, I plan and set structure for the energy rush to come under the bright light of the Full Moon. Under the brilliance of the Full Moon, “action” is optimized. My creative energy is at its peak and I am fully engaged in working my priority project, grateful for my progress. And, as the Full Moon wanes, I use this phase of the cycle to focus on finishing, giving special attention to the energy of completion. As the moon goes dark, this is when I rest, reflect, and set new intentions so that I begin the cycle again in flow.
So, as we approach the end of January, and celebrate a Full Moon, I invite you to begin noticing your energy. Give yourself permission to feel your way through these cycles. If, like me, you’re gently moving into this New Year (new cycle), you can begin by using this Full Moon energy to acknowledge your achievements and lessons learned in 2023 and declare your readiness for new growth in 2024.
If you’re not quite sure where you want to focus your creative energy in 2024, now is the time to work toward clarity. And if you’re having trouble choosing your priorities, I am available to provide support. Send an email to nanette@wisewellwomen.com to request a complimentary Clarity Session.
You get to decide what feels aligned for you. Let the moon be your guide.
