Jeff Masenheimer, LAC Musings
June represents the close of spring and the beginning of summer. The first thing that always comes to mind is Heat and lots of it. This is heart season and of course the color of the season is red. This is a great time of year to drink mint tea and chrysanthemum tea to reduce heat in the body especially if you like being outside in the hot air. As a general rule it is better to have a diet with fewer meats and more veggies and salads during this season to balance the body with cold foods combined with the hot season. The heart and mind hold a close relationship in this season and therefore dysfunctions of the heart can represent in forms of excessive joy (to the point you cannot sleep) or forms of depression which can also cause insomnia.
Foot massage is especially great during this season as it has a direct connection to calming the mind.
Schedule an acupuncture appointment this month with Jeff and mention this article when scheduling your appointment and get a free 10 minute foot massage with your session.

What We're Reading Right Now
Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection
the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain.
This is an interesting take on just another way to manage your chronic pain

These 90-Year-Old Runners Have Some Advice for You
Runners at the National Senior Games in Miramar, Fla., competed in events ranging from the 50 meters to 1,500 meters. Their secret? “You’ve got to keep moving.”
- Published May 22, 2022
- Updated May 23, 2022
This is a terrific piece interviewing folks well into their 90's still competing, including this local Annapolis Strider interviewed for the article:
Yvonne Aasen
90 years old, Westminster, Md.
Many have called Yvonne Aasen an inspiration. But running is “just what I do,” she said. “I feel good when I run, and when I don’t run it feels like I’m missing something.”
As a member of two running clubs — the Annapolis Striders and the Westminster Road Runners Club — she embraces the opportunity to compete. Like her friendly rival, the 93-year-old Atchley, Aasen entered the 50-meter dash, the 100, 400, 800 and 1,500. In some races, she was one of only two runners. But she didn’t mind. “I feel competitive even when I don’t have competition,” she said.
And for runners looking to keep pace? “Run every day, even if it’s a short distance,” she said. “I can’t run very much now, but when I can’t run anymore I’ll still walk.”

Senior Reflections
Spending Their Best Years on the Bay
One of One.'s own, is highlighted in last month's Bay Weekly, check out her article, congrats Liz to a life well lived!
“What is that?” I said to the person sitting next to me on the couch.
“That’s a shark’s tooth,” he said. “We found it on the shore in the sand. It’s thousands of years old and was in the cliffs above us for many centuries, just recently washed down here for me to find.”
This dramatic introduction to the wonders of Chesapeake Country happened near the Calvert Cliffs area when I was about 9 or 10. Years later, I got a sailboat and drove down from D.C. to where I had it moored.
Then it occurred to me that living here is what I really wanted. I have been here for over 40 years and intend to be here the rest of my life. I live in a community on the South River with access to the Bay. I have sailed, kayaked, and canoed all around this area. I love the smell and the slightly salty breeze coming off the water. I love seeing, catching, and eating the crabs. And I can tolerate the sea nettles that get into everything, including my boat.
I have wonderful memories of events on the water and at my house that I can only ascribe to living in Chesapeake Country.
