Hi Neighbors,

Happy Father's Day! I hope everyone has a chance to celebrate and enjoy the great weather forecast for this weekend.

As the City Budget process has continued, I have worked day and night to advocate for District 8 residents and our priorities. From ensuring services go without interruption, to advocating for stronger investments in our neighborhoods, I am proud of the community support and countless meetings that have resulted in the City Council's unanimous support of this fiscal year's City Budget. You can read more about the approved budget here, or further below in this newsletter's City Hall Update.

I will continue discussions with city departments, administration, and the community to ensure our approved city budget is properly implemented. By continuing to work together, I know our neighborhood's quality of life, public safety, and community investments can further strengthen to new heights.

As District 8 families embark on our various Summer 2024 activities and celebrations with dads and grads, be sure to check out some of our upcoming events including our Fourth of July Fireworks Show at Lake Cunningham! I have also included some recently completed city park capital improvements that I hope you can all enjoy some time this Summer.

Stay tuned for more events and updates this year including the grand opening of CaliBunga (coming soon)!

Best,

Domingo Candelas

In the Community

Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, we remember and honor all those who sacrificed their lives for our country’s liberties and freedoms through military service.

District 8 Community Hero Award

During this year’s State of the City, I was honored to recognize the District 8 Community Roundtable (D8CRT) with the District 8 Community Hero Award!

Over the last 18 months, D8CRT members and the board have collaborated closely with my office from implementing CERT readiness workshop training to supporting events such as our Santa at the Square event and 2024 Music in the Square summer series.

Thank you D8CRT! Looking forward to continuing our partnership to improve the quality of life for our District 8 neighbors!

Pride Month

My colleagues and I raised the pride flag at City Hall to celebrate Pride Month. I want to thank my colleagues Councilmember Torres, Davis, and Foley for co-hosting this event.

The efforts of trailblazers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera continue to inspire others to fight against oppression. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and welcoming community in the City of San José

Senior Scam Stopper at Oakmont

We held an informative Senior Scam Stopper Workshop at the Oakmont of Silvercreek! Thank you to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the Contractor State Licensing Board, and the California Department of Insurance for their collaboration.

It is imperative to keep our community members informed to minimize their vulnerability against common scams.

Salsa Night at the Square

Salsa Night at the Square was a blast! Our neighbors came together to build community with a beautiful evening featuring salsa lessons and delicious Puerto Rican food, courtesy of Mama Rocs Kitchen.

Thank you again to all our community partners who made this Music in the Square + Salsa Night collaboration possible! Check out With Grace Hospice to learn more about their community work and services.

City Hall Update

Fiscal Year 2024-2025 City Budget Summary

The City Council unanimously approved the budget for the next fiscal year. I have been committed to hearing directly from District 8 residents on their priorities and concerns in our community having held budget meetings in various neighborhoods throughout the year. Through your support and input, we are making progress on vital issues that matter to our community.

I believe that we need to do more for our unhoused neighbors to meet the moment of this crisis. To truly alleviate and address our homelessness crisis we need to solve this issue at the root cause. While the goal is producing more housing units, we need to find immediate, cost-effective solutions while these units come to fruition. We need to have a balanced approach which includes interim housing options like quick build communities and safe parking programs. I have and will continue to support holistic housing solutions that address the root cause of our crisis while meeting the need of the moment to tackle the unsheltered homelessness crisis– we can do both.

Park Capital Improvements

After much advocacy and meeting with PRNS staff, I am happy to report the completion of the Welch Park Play Structure Improvement (seen above). This play structure in Welch Park has been a long-time community advocacy endeavor. Through continued community support, PRNS authorized the repair of the play structure through the installation of a new footbridge.

Additionally, many residents in the Fernish Park neighborhood have been working hand in hand with my office. One request was for more community amenities at the park. Last year I submitted a Budget Document for park improvements at Fernish Park. I am happy to announce the completion of the BBQ pit and picnic table installations at Fernish Park.

Announcements

Water activities are a great way to stay cool and enjoy time with your friends and your family. However, if you aren’t careful, someone you care about could get hurt—or even drown. According to the CDC, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1–14, and swimming pools are where the majority of those fatalities occur.

Remember, when it comes to water safety, be proactive and stay vigilant. This will help ensure a pleasant but safe water experience for everyone. For more information about swimming pool safety, please visit the SJFD Water Safety page for more information.
