This is a free, public, book reading/signing hosted by the Iowa Artisans Gallery and Iowa author Barbara Hall for her 2017 book: Women and the Land. Come meet the author, obtain your own signed book copy, and mingle with other enthusiasts. Refreshments will be served.

New to the gallery- Hilde Debruyne

Hilde DeBruyne was selected to participate at the highly competitive 11th Accessible Art Fair at the Bozar in Brussels in October, which afforded her the opportunity to travel there.

"Listen to the Wind" by Hilde DeBruyne was officially unveiled at State Street in Guthrie Center. It is part of the Western Skies Scenic Byways: a wonderful project to encourage travelers to take the Byway and explore Iowa's countryside.

Hilde DeBruyne is a contemporary sculptor born in Belgium to a family of artists. Growing up, her house was filled with timeless works of art, including African masks and remnants of Gothic cathedrals. Her work is mainly abstract and is evocative of sculptors Henry Moore and Kenneth Price . Having studied art history and archeology at the University of Ghent, DeBruyne’s work incorporates symbolisms that represent the cycle of life and can be found in prehistoric and ancient sculpture form around the world. Similarly, fragments of the feminine form emerge from her organic textures and within rock formations, pebbles, and weathered wood that she often uses in her work. She is represented in public and private collections, has exhibited internationally, and contributed several public art murals and sculptures to the state of Iowa in the United States, where she currently live and works.

Potter of the Month

Since childhood, I have loved to draw, paint and "make things," and I was lucky to have a mom who let me make a mess as a child and teachers who recognized and nurtured my talent. I discovered my passion for clay in 1979 by taking a community college course at Brookhaven College in Dallas, TX. In 1989 we moved back to Illinois and settled in Crystal Lake; eventually making space for a tiny clay studio in my basement. I have taken many college level classes in pottery, design and metals, and attended many local and national workshops, but am very proud to proclaim myself "self-taught."

Iowa City artist, Hal Ide, was invited by the National Parks Service to participate in their Artist-In-Residence program at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in Washington state

Hal's Second Sunday presentation at IAG described an interesting journey from deciding to apply for the program to living a completely different experience due to the major forest fires in the region.
