All Things, All Saints'

July 4, 2024

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders

of this country won liberty for themselves and for us,

and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reflection

from Chaplain Erin

“Summertime,

and the living is easy.”

This song runs through my head at this time of year. It's the opening line from a song written by Ira Gershwin for his opera Porgy and Bess. It is jazzy and bluesy and can belted out with attitude or sung quietly like a lullaby. As a matter of fact, I used to sing it to my babies when they were little.

It often feels like the living will be easy when we get to "summertime." In the crazy last few weeks of school, when all the grades must be done, homework and finals graded, and paperwork completed, I long for those summer days. During the week of VBS, when we take our students out into the community to serve the world, and I go home sore and exhausted, I eagerly await that slow, quiet "summer" just around the corner. While the Rector is away, serving a congregation in St. Bart's, I have been looking forward to that "summer" time when I will no longer be the priest-in-charge of the funerals and weddings that mark the church's work.

One of the traps of thinking about the future that way is to wish for a time when real life can begin, as opposed to this overwhelming present. Real life is right now. Whatever is happening, we need to be present now. I am honored to serve people at the end of their lives and stand with them as they make lifelong vows or renew them. I want to be present as real life is happening.

On the other hand, we also need to embrace quiet time when it is too hot to work outside. We need to enjoy doing less while we can. We need to renew and refresh when the opportunity presents itself. I want to snuggle my grandkids, read all the books, and listen to my husband as he shares what's happening in his life. I, just like all of you, need to Sabbath.

Ecclesiastes reminds us that God has made a time for every purpose. There is a time to be incredibly busy, and there is a time to kick your feet up and chill. God has richly blessed us with both. I feel fortunate to share my time with all of you. I also get to be the Gamma to two of my favorite people, both incredible gifts from God!

I hope everyone has everything they need this summer. A time to be busy and a time to relax. A time to be with people who love you and the people you love. Oh, and one little fact about singing "Summertime" to my kids. One of the lines is, "Your daddy's Rich, and your mom is good-looking." For my children - that was true! Hahaha!

From this Gamma, I remind you to drink lots of water and wear sunscreen. God loves you, and I love you, too!

THIS SUNDAY: Ashlie Smith & the All Saints’ Trio: Tom Peterson (keys), Pat Castle (bass), & Perry Pauley (drums), featuring jazz versions of some of our favorite hymns. Beignets, hot and fresh, made in a tent in our parking lot! “Switch” Beignets will be here to satisfy even the most discerning beignet palate! Enjoy genuine coffee from Café Du Monde in New Orleans & our regular brew, too. Wear your Mardi Gras Beads and come let the good times roll!

LISTEN EVERYWHERE!
We are excited to introduce our new assistive listening system.

This user-friendly Wi-Fi system enhances sound directly from the church sound system, minimizing background noise for clearer speech.
We will have six (6) listening devices/receivers available, each offering four listening options:

·     An ear speaker that fits comfortably over the ear and works with hearing aids.

·     A neck loop compatible with t-coil-enabled hearing aids and cochlear implants.

·     Traditional over-the-head headphones.

·     The option to use your own wired earbuds or headphones.

Just chat with an usher or Lori Brooks in the narthex to check out one of the receivers and ear pieces for an enhanced worship experience!

NOW: Magnifying glasses available for check-out also!
Where Everyone Knows Your Name!
Click on the QR code to order one today!

There is a new, sleek whiteboard for NAME TAGS in the narthex--just around the corner from the Legacy Circle monument. We've also created a spot for New Orders, making it easier for you to participate in this new system. If you don't see yours, be sure to contact Lori Brooks in the Church Office at lbrooks@allsaintsoncentral.org.
