Scripture Readings for June 23, 2024

Now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation! Now we are in the storm, the boat almost swamped; but Jesus is here now, and when we call him, he will calm the storm. Even the wind and waves listen to him as they would to their creator. We also listen to him and are called to believe in the power of God’s word in him, a power greater than all that we fear.

Job 38:1-11; Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32; 1 Corinthians 12:14–26; Mark 4:35-41

From the Pastor's Desk

Grace and peace to you!

This summer we have been talking about what it means to be church. This Sunday we will hear one of my favorite scriptures from 1 Corinthians 12. The apostle Paul paints a picture of how to be church. Paul tells the early church that since Jesus has ascended to heaven to be with God, he does not have a body on this earth anymore. Then Paul goes on to explain that each of us are a part of the body of Christ – an eye, or a nose, or a hand. Though the gifts we have are different, they are each so very important in the body of Christ.

Our mission statement at Hutto Lutheran Church begins "we are one body in Christ. Our welcome statement says that you are welcome at Hutto Lutheran Church- regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, belief, income level or education – we invite you to be a part of this faith community. As we come together with all of our varied talents, life experiences, joys and challenges, God shines light through each of us in the body of Christ, and in the world.

My hope for myself is to have courage to show up in the world authentically, and to realize that my authentic self is just what the body of Christ needs, and what the world needs. Paul says, And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? You are an important part of this world and the body of Christ. We wouldn’t be the same without you.

We have been blessed to partner with the Arc since August of 2022. They hold classes in the 502 ministry center on our property Monday through Friday and provide education and opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. If you would like to find out more about the Arc of the Capitol, you can check out their website The picture is from the Arc’s garden workday in March when they helped clean up our butterfly garden.

This Sunday as we gather together for worship we will hear from Cierra Quitugua and Rachel Sumbillo, site directors with Arc of the Capital Area and Debbie Weiderhold, executive director of United Partners in Pflugerville.

God’s peace,

Pastor Amanda
