Seventh Sunday of Easter
| |
Paraments color: WHITE
Scripture Readings for May 12, 2024
The gospel for Easter’s seventh Sunday is always taken from the long prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John’s gospel on the night before his death, and always includes Jesus’ desire that his followers will be one as he and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or institutional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love, and joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit whom we have received but also await. Come, Holy Spirit!
Acts 1:15-17, 21-26; Psalm 1; 1 John 5:9-13; John 17:6-19

From the Pastor's Desk
Grace and peace to you!
This week is a week when we celebrate mothers. Maybe you have had the experience of being a mother? Maybe your body has brought another life into this world, or maybe you have the experience of reflecting God’s adoptive love for us as you have been mother in every other way after birth. Maybe you are not a mother, but you have shown the love of a mother to others in your life.
One human experience that we all hold in common is being born. We all have a belly button. In a world that boasts independence, we are reminded of our interconnectedness, and the life of others that brought us into this world.
The scripture is full of images of God as mother, of God protecting children under her wings (Psa. 17:8, Psa. 57:1, Psa. 91:4 Matthew 23:37; Luke 13:34), and of God as a human mother (Isa. 42:14, Isa. 66:13Isa. 49:15).
By far my favorite mothering image of God comes from Romans 8:22. “We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now… we ourselves…groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.”
There are so many moments in our lives that we experience pain and suffering. In this scripture I see God working in and through our suffering so that it is no longer meaningless pain, but just as in childbirth, productive pain that leads to new life.
We give thanks this week for the mothers in our lives. Maybe we have the joy of getting to celebrate with them today, or maybe we feel especially this week the hole that is left in this world in their absence, and gratitude for all the love they shared in their life with us on earth.
What gratitude is on your heart this week for the mothers in your life? How do you give thanks this week for the opportunities you have had to be a mother? What ways do you give thanks this week for God’s mothering presence in your life?
God’s peace,
Pastor Amanda

Bold Women's Day 2024
Celebrate the bold women in your life.
Bold Women’s Day–May 26th– celebrates all Lutheran women who have acted or are acting boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. Some women are bold in their unceasing prayers. Other women are bold in their service to those in need. Still other women are bold in their advocacy or through their hospitality. Whether we live out our bold story of faith in the workplace, family home or community, our faith compels us to make a difference in the lives of others. It’s all about living out our baptismal call, about being a disciple of Christ. Are you bold? To find out more contact Barbie Johnson, 512-947-5618.
