A Note from Gary Alpert,

President of SRVEF Board of Directors

Our annual Celebrate Innovation in Education luncheon was held on February 7th at the Bay Club Crow Canyon. This event recognizes the ongoing work of the Major Gifts and Endowment Committee to support long-term and innovative education programs within SRVUSD.

Attendees were treated to a performance by the San Ramon Valley High School Jazz Ensemble, an inspiring State of the District talk, by Superintendent Dr. John Malloy, and updates on some of the initiatives funded by the Endowment Fund.

This school year the Endowment funded four exciting programs. SRVUSD staff presented three of them at the luncheon.

Generation Citizen - Generation Citizen provides high school and middle school teachers with the curriculum, training, and support for teaching real-world civics. Students select and work on real issues, gaining valuable experiences in what it takes to effect change. Now in its 4th year, Generation Citizen continues to expand to more middle and high schools.

Culturally Relevant Music and Professional Development – This initiative continues to create and enhance dialogue and ongoing professional development opportunities for SRVUSD TK-12 music educators in the areas of culturally relevant and responsive music instruction.

Esports – Through this creative initiative, SRVUSD is implementing a pilot Esports program at California High School. Esports is a growing phenomenon and is not simply playing video games. It is a highly competitive structured program, regulated by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). Esports attract students who might have been traditionally underserved.

Professional Learning – This initiative encourages and supports educators as they engage in professional learning. SRVUSD recently implemented an online platform (alludolearning.com) that provides relevant and timely professional development and stores activities in one place, allowing better tracking and visibility in staff professional learning.

In SRVUSD, e-bikes and scooters have risen in popularity as a method of transportation for students’ to get to-and-from school. You may have seen even more of these out in the community since the holidays. Since these vehicles can travel at higher speeds than traditional bikes, e-bikes and scooters require extra caution, and riders must follow the laws and rules of the road. The district has created new resources for the safety of all student riders, drivers, and pedestrians. We encourage our partners in the SRVEF to help us spread the word about how parents can help the district prioritize student safety.

Local police agencies have partnered with SRVUSD to share the importance of traffic safety. Principal Jeff Osborn of Diablo Vista Middle School recently met with Chief Shields from the Danville Police Department to discuss multiple safety topics, including e-scooters, e-bikes, pedestrian safety, and tips for the safe shared use of the Iron Horse Trail. SRVUSD recorded their conversation and created this E-Bike and Scooter Safety Video.

The new SRVUSD At-a-Glance Summary Safety Chart provides students and parents with important information about bikes, e-bikes, and scooters.

Superintendent Dr. John Malloy wants our entire community to know that the safety and well-being of our students is a top priority. We encourage all parents and students to watch our E-Bike and Scooter Safety video so that all are well-informed, and our entire community - students, riders, pedestrians, and drivers - can stay safe.

All riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet by California law. In addition to helmets, riders must obey traffic signals, stop signs, and other road regulations just as they would when driving a car. Finally, we want to remind our entire community that per the vehicle code, a child must have a permit or driver’s license to be allowed to ride a motorized scooter off private property.

Viewers can skip directly to these sections in the E-Bike and Scooter Safety Video for specific information:
