In a new article posted to the Chesterfield On Point blog, you can learn more about Curtis Hairston and Travis Williams, who were sworn in as judges in the county's General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts, respectively, in October 2021.
Neither Hairston nor Williams had ambitions of becoming a judge when they decided to pursue careers in the law.
While their names will be included in history books as the first Black men to serve as full-time judges in Chesterfield, both men look forward to a day when judicial appointments of people who look like them become far more routine.

Potential Moseley Elementary Pedestrian Connector Will Be Subject of Feb. 15 Meeting
|
|
Matoaca District Supervisor Kevin Carroll will host a community meeting next Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Moseley Elementary School to discuss a potential pedestrian bridge and trail connection from Jones Run Lane and Jones Run Trail to the school.
Moseley Elementary is located at 7100 Magnolia Green Parkway. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
Chesterfield Parks and Recreation’s current concept plan proposes construction of a 6-foot-wide paved path that would connect to an existing sidewalk along Jones Run Trail, cross a creek on school property via pedestrian bridge and terminate near the front of the building.
The project would be intended to enhance pedestrian access to Moseley Elementary for families who live nearby and would like for their children to have the option of walking to school.
Supervisor Carroll encourages citizens to attend the community meeting and provide feedback about the project. You can also offer input virtually by completing a survey at https://tinyurl.com/5n6j4jsu.

Hi there, my name is Orion!
I’m a 63 lb. Pitbull, around 6 years old, with a big ole head! OMG I love to cuddle and rest my head on your lap (which means pet my head in dog language). Not only am I super handsome, I know sit too.
I am very good with dogs, even puppies. I am super excited to meet people and can’t wait to have a family of my own. I am most likely already housetrained and I have excellent manners on a leash.
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.

Tastes Like War: A Virtual Author Talk
With Grace M. Cho Set for Feb. 16
|
|
You’re invited to an insightful chat with award-winning author Grace M. Cho as she discusses her memoir, Tastes Like War, next Thursday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. Register by visiting https://tinyurl.com/bdhxrwau.
Grace M. Cho grew up as the daughter of a white American merchant marine and the Korean bar hostess he met abroad. They were one of few immigrants in a xenophobic small town during the Cold War, where identity was politicized by everyday details—language, cultural references, memories, and food. When Grace was fifteen, her dynamic mother experienced the onset of schizophrenia, a condition that would continue and evolve for the rest of her life.
Part food memoir, part sociological investigation, Tastes Like War is a hybrid text about a daughter’s search through intimate and global history for the roots of her mother’s schizophrenia. In her mother’s final years, Grace learned to cook dishes from her mother’s childhood in order to invite the past into the present, and to hold space for her mother’s multiple voices at the table. And through careful listening over these shared meals, Grace discovered not only the things that broke the brilliant, complicated woman who raised her—but also the things that kept her alive.

Concerned About Lead Paint in Your Home? Apply for Free Assessment and Abatement Program
|
|
A child’s brain grows rapidly during the first five years of life. Research shows lead exposure can harm a child’s health and brain development.
Children can be directly exposed to this hazard if they live in an older home that contains old lead-based paint, typically built before 1978. Lead-based paint can peel and crack into tiny pieces creating dust that children breath in or swallow.
Fortunately, lead exposure is preventable.
Chesterfield County’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program was created to protect children five years and younger and expectant mothers from lead exposure. In partnership with our non-profit partner, project:HOMES, families may qualify for a free lead hazard assessment and household repairs to remove lead exposure from their homes. No county staff will enter your home. This program has serviced several homes and is currently repairing others in Chesterfield that have lead-based paint.
If you’re a caregiver of younger children in an older home, you may also qualify for this program. For more information, please contact Emily Hurley by emailing Emily.Hurley@projecthomes.org or calling 804-718-0517.

Chesterfield Offers Tax Exemption

|
Are you aware that Chesterfield County allows a partial real estate tax exemption for the rehabilitation, renovation, or replacement of older residential structures?
The goal of this program is to help protect and preserve our aging neighborhoods. Upon approval, the partial tax exemption will be in effect for 15 years and transfers with the real estate. The amount of the exemption is based solely on increased assessment value, not the amount spent on the improvement project. There is no application fee.
