The Death of Bazil Smith and His Obituary

We are sad to announce the death of Bazil Smith, who passed away at the age of 74 on Monday, August 26, 2024, with his wife Mallie by his side. Bazil and Mallie have been members of Trinity for the past five years and would often bring their grandson, Philemon, to church with them.

We wanted to share the following beautiful obituary written by Bazil's family, which was read during his funeral at Trinity on Saturday, August 31st:

Bazil Norman Smith was born on March 26,1950 in Florence Hill, St. Andrew Jamaica to the late Dudley and Jemima Smith. He was the first of 7 siblings, Phyliss, Monica, Oswald, Margaret, Nuthall, and Lester.

He leaves behind, to cherish his memories, his dearly beloved wife Mallie Smith. They shared 53 years of marriage and achieved everything together. Family was very important to Bazil. A father of four children, Desmond, Stephina, Norman and Keisha, he supported and encouraged them to work towards their goals. A man of faith, he believed that all things are possible through Christ our Lord and Savior. Bazil also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, in addition to his extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in law, sisters-in law and many business associates.

Bazil operated his own business for many years until he migrated to the U. S. He was successful in rearing and purchasing livestock to be butchered, which he sold to many large supermarkets, colleges, restaurants and meat stores in Kingston, Jamaica. Throughout his life he left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him both in his personal life and business affairs. He gave many a sense of hope by encouraging them to do good, work hard and save to secure a better financial future. He also had a sense of humor that could cheer you up easily. He tried to find humor in life no matter what, but when time came to be serious without a doubt he would not stand for foolishness. He was affable and made the best of life. Bazil was a lion at heart as he was not scared to get through any challenges that came his way. A man of integrity, he lived a full life and achieved all his life’s goals.

While he is no longer with us in person, he will remain in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace. We love you forever more.

***********************************************

Please hold Mallie, their children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends, both here in the US and in Jamaica, in your prayers.

Condolences may be sent to Mallie Smith at 475 Hermay Dr, Hamilton, OH 45013.

Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Bazil. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, deal graciously with Mallie and the entire Smith family in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thank you for your faithfulness in compassion and prayer.

(Prayers from The Book of Common Prayer, 465 and 494.)

Thank You and Farewell from Mother Suzanne

Dear Trinity Folk,

I know this is a bittersweet time. There were lots of tears on my last Sunday morning as many of us worshipped together for the last time. The sharing of the Eucharist was especially moving in a way I never experienced before. There was such a profound and shared sense of vulnerability, intimacy, and gratitude. It felt like the Altar rail had turned into a dinner table, like we were feasting with God and with one another as one close family. It was exactly what the Altar table is to be. It took me several days to take it all in.

Thank you for telling me what our time together has meant for you, for your insights into how my new call seems made for me, for the beautiful gifts and cards, and for all your well wishes.

It has truly been a gift to share in your lives, to share in the joys, struggles, and sorrows of daily life, in the ponderings of our spiritual journey with God.

Let me leave you with my hopes and prayers, as expressed in the last several Sunday sermons. These are prayers and hopes for you as individuals, but just as importantly they are prayers and hopes for you as the community of faith called Trinity Hamilton.

I wish for you …

  • the knowledge of God’s profound love,
  • the experience of God’s forgiveness and re-creation,
  • the reliance of being bound to God’s Words of hope,
  • and the gifts of God’s wisdom and strengthening of faith.

And I wish for you the most important and lifegiving thing of all …

  • That you be bound more and more and evermore to the life of Jesus and to one another through Jesus.
  • That you eat his body and drink his blood and in doing so

know that he is indeed alive in you.

  • That you read, study, and consume his Word,

and know that he himself is teaching you.

  • That you be filled with his spirit in a way that his love heals you and you possess a new light that cannot be contained.
  • That you may indeed walk in his ways and follow his will in a way that his love shines through you and gives life to others.

In the Name of the God who loves us,

who forgives us and re-creates us,

whose Word give us hope,

who gives us wisdom and strengthens our faithfulness,

and who most importantly gives us life through

the flesh and spirit of Jesus.

Amen.

Blessings and love,

Mother Suzanne +

Here are some pictures from the celebration potluck held after Mother Suzanne's final worship service with us on Sunday, August 25th. We had a great turnout!

An Update from Jennifer Elliott,

Sr. Warden and Music Director:

On behalf of the Vestry, I want to thank Mother Suzanne for these past 11 years of ministry with us and congratulate her on her new calling in Iowa.

The Vestry has started working with the Rev. Canon Michael Spencer, Transition Officer of the Diocese of Southern Ohio, to begin the process of discernment and transition. We will provide regular updates to you throughout the transition process. We have a strong Vestry and solid leadership in our ministries, and I know we will successfully work through this transition period into Trinity's next chapter.

The Rev. Kip Colegrove will be serving as the celebrant for our in-person worship services during the month of September. We are working on plans/schedules beyond September, and I will communicate details once they are finalized.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (513) 218-7817 or jenniferelliott32@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Elliott, Sr. Warden and Music Director

Update: Pill Bottle Collection for

Matthew 25 Ministries

We are continuing to collect empty plastic pill bottles at Trinity for the time being, but they must meet the guidelines below. If the guidelines are not able to be followed, we will need to discontinue collection at the church in the future. Individuals can still take the bottles directly to Matthew 25 Ministries in Blue Ash, OH.

For many years, Trinity has collected empty plastic pill bottles for donation to Matthew 25 Ministries. They are used in shipments of medical supplies.

Matthew 25 Ministries has now changed the requirements for these donations. Previously, labels could be left on the donated bottles, but now labels (and any glue residue) must be removed from the bottles.

If you donate pill bottles to Trinity's collection bin, they must meet the following guidelines:

Acceptable collection items include:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter pill bottles
  • Large and small pill bottles
  • Pill bottles with and without secure caps (child-resistant)

Pill bottle donations should adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Bottles included in shipments of medical supplies must have an all plastic lid.
  • All labels should be removed, leaving no glue or residue. An easy way to remove the labels is to soak the bottles in rubbing alcohol.
  • All bottles and lids should be washed in very hot water and dish soap, rinsed, and dried thoroughly.
  • Caps should be placed back onto clean, dried bottles.
  • Clean, recapped bottles should be placed into large resealable bags marked “Clean Bottles.” These will be included in shipments of medical supplies.

Sign Up to Donate Altar Flowers

Dates in September, October and November are available.

If you would like to provide the altar flowers for a Sunday service, please contact Sue Samoviski at 513-478-8918 or suesamo63@gmail.com to reserve a date(s).

You may choose to call a florist to order the flowers, or you can purchase the flowers at the grocery store and make two arrangements for the altar. Or, you could provide flowers from your garden or potted plants.

Clear plastic vases are available at church if you need them or you can arrange them directly into the altar vases.

Another option is to send a monetary donation to Trinity in lieu of flowers and in memory of or in honor of your loved ones.

If you do that, please be sure to let Sue know the

dedication of your donation.
