Speaker Pro Tempore 18th District
Sumner, Trousdale & Part of Davidson Counties
What's Happening at the Capitol?
Last week was a significant one. After many long meetings on the floor, the 112th General Assembly completed its business and adjourned sine die on Thursday, April 28th. In the coming weeks, I will be posting videos and summaries on my social profiles which will give an overview of the legislation passed this session and how it affects you!
2022 National Crime Victims' Rights Week
Last week, I joined in recognizing National Crime Victims' Rights Week. During the week, I was pleased to have passed Senate Bill 2377. This bill requires that a statewide criminal proceedings notification system be established July 1, 2022. The system will serve as a pilot program for three years for the purpose of increasing the transparency and efficiency of the criminal justice process. The Victims Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) will allow for text notifications for all victims to have access, equity and information.
Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement Act
On Wednesday, the Senate passed the bill which creates a new K-12 education funding formula. I have felt this to be the most crucial educational issue in my time in the General Assembly, and I am glad to have been a part of this success. Tennessee has been operating under the Basic Education Program funding formula for thirty years, and it was time for reform. The new model is one that allows a method for adjustments and gives the state more awareness and direct oversight of the return on investment for dollars distributed to school districts across Tennessee.
