Speaker Pro Tempore 18th District
Sumner, Trousdale & Part of Davidson Counties
What's Happening at the Capitol?
The Senate worked diligently last week. We had Senate Floor Session two days during the week and the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee met several times to discuss the state's FY 22/23 budget. On Wednesday, I presented a constitutional amendment that affects Article II, Section 31. After being read on the floor three times, the amendment passed the Senate with no opposition. Next, it will be heard on the floor of the House of Representatives. If passed, it must be heard and passed again in either the 113th or 114th General Assembly. Finally, the amendment will be placed on the ballot for a statewide referendum in November 2026.
State Budget: From Committee to the Floor
This week, both the Senate and the House passed the FY 22/23 budget for the state. There was a great deal of discussion and a lot of compromise to get our state to where it is today, and I am proud of the budget teams and the legislature for working so hard to pass a budget that will keep our Great State in a strong financial position. We have kept Tennessee one of the most financially stable and responsible states in the country.
Childhelp Tennessee
This Tuesday, I attended the Day of Hope benefit concert for Childhelp Tennessee.
Childhelp is a national organization that works toward raising awareness of and preventing child abuse. They offer resources which aid in building strong, healthy families. In Tennessee, the organization has an Advocacy Center and a Foster Family Agency which serve the children of our state. I am honored to have been awarded the 2022 Childhelper Legislative Hero Award alongside Representative Mary Littleton. I suggest checking out their website to learn more about their important work.
Early Voting Is Open
On Wednesday April 13th, early voting opened for both Sumner and Trousdale Counties! Local elections are crucial to the success of our district, so I encourage all of you to go out, get to know our local candidates, and vote! Early voting closes on the 28th of this month.
Constituent Spotlight!
We want to spotlight a different member of our community each week. Do you know someone in the 18th District who has done something extraordinary recently? Send us an email (sen.ferrell.haile@capitol.tn.gov), with subject line "Constituent Spotlight Submission" and tell us about them. We will read through each submission and decide on one person to highlight in our newsletter each week.
