From our Executive Director
New Year, New Board Members
|
|
Before embarking on 2020-2021 fiscal year, let’s reflect on all of the incredible accomplishments we made together despite the challenges. The pandemic hit volunteers and staff with the need to change the way that we operate to keep our community safe. Resilience and commitment to the mission never faltered, and we are thankful for the employees, supporters and volunteers that keep us on target.

This year, Habitat successfully built and sold nine news homes and did 48 repairs for our neighbors in need. Both our construction and repair mission worked through the last six months with CDC recommendations in place and kept our volunteers healthy! Our ReStore was able to make monumental changes to traffic flow, the register and general sanitation practices that ensure everyone’s safety. Improvements to the overall layout, organization, and ambiance improved the shopping experience and revenue! We are proud to work within a community that is committed to taking care of each other.

|
Welcome to our new Board Members! We are grateful to have a strong team of leaders from our entire service area of Moore, Richmond and Hoke counties to provide guidance and support to our mission. This year, we are excited to announce several additions to our Board.

Our Board members provide support in numerous ways. Not only do they provide fiduciary oversight and general operations support, they also are active participants in the fundraising efforts of our organization. 100% of our board members made donations to our affiliate last year. We want to extend a special thanks to them for their double-down matching challenge following our spring gala. When Covid threw a wrench into our traditional event planning, our Board came through with a unique challenge that inspired our community to double their efforts by donating in the weeks following the gala. This effort made it possible for us to meet our fundraising goal for the event!
We are always on the lookout for new Board members who are passionate about our mission. Most of our board members begin by serving on one of our committees for a year. If you would like to learn more about Finance, Business Build, Women Build, Apostles Build, Gala, ReStore or other committees, please let me know.

Richmond County Build Kicks-Off
Habitat is thrilled to announce that we will be partnering with local churches, businesses, and individuals to build the 16th home in Richmond County for the Shaw Family. Aurilla Shaw is a single mother raising her two sons and a daughter in Richmond County. Ms. Shaw, driven to create a better future for her family and give back to her community, is partnering with over 300 hours of “sweat equity” on the construction site and in the ReStore. She will be buying her home at 173 Westfield Drive in Rockingham with a guaranteed affordable mortgage.
|
|
“Walls Up Day” will kick off with a group from United Way’s “Day of Giving” and Burlington Industries. United Way has been instrumental in assisting with Habitat's Mission and connecting with the Rockingham community.
First United Methodist Church of Rockingham, lead by Pastor Allen Bingham, is donating $15,000 towards the build and has booked a build day on the construction site. Director, Amie Fraley, attended a service with the Shaw family in March and had the opportunity to speak with several members of the congregations and Pastor Bingham. We were overwhelmed by the quick response and outpouring of support by the community.
|
|
Freedom Baptist Church and Pastor Ronnie Mclean hosted our June Faith Relations meeting. In one day alone, they signed up enough volunteers to fill the build day on Friday, September 11th. They collected a special offering and did a Facebook campaign to raise over $10,000 to help fund the materials to build an energy-efficient, quality home. Rockingham Church of God Prophecy has also donated over $1,000 to building materials.
Momentum has skyrocketed over the summer thanks to a community that believes in our mission and our new volunteer Faith Build Ambassador, Dan Joslin. Dan has filled all the build days with the support of community leaders!

Lawn Maintenance 101 with
our Homeowners in Progress
Every year new Homeowners in Progress are required to attend classes designed to empower them to be successful homeowners. In August, Ed Kaylor Habitat Construction Manager instructed our Homeowners on maintaining their yard and how to use standard yard tools. They learned how to start and service a lawnmower and weed eater. They also learned about various types of shovels, rakes and hedge trimmers that they should have in their shed. Then we moved onto some of the more powerful tools that you may rent from time to time to improve the exterior look of your home. The more powerful the tool, the more excited our Homeowners became!

Repair Program Update
.
Our Repair Team has been out and about making homes safer for families in need of urgent repairs neccesary to age in place. In August, the team replaced a rotting back porch and steps for Mr. Wallace McKinnon in Cameron so they can safely exit their home. In Southern Pines, The Robinsons had a ramp installed to aid Mr. & Mrs. Robinson (she is an amputee) access their home by wheelchair.
Several years of hard work, building our reputation as a leader in affordable critical home repair, has made it possible for us to take our repair program to the next level. Habitat received final approval and award confirmation of two grants; TheUrgent Repair Program grant for Richmond County ($100K funds provided by NCHFA from the NC Housing Trust Fund), and the USDA Home Preservation Grant that will support repairs in Moore, Richmond and Hoke counties ($273K). We anticipate using sub-contractors on these large scale home repairs.
We are also fortunate to be supported by local grants, including Moore County Community Foundation, Brownson Memorial, United Way of Richmond County, and Community Foundation of Richmond County
|
|
The recently established West Southern Pines Neighborhood Revitalization Team finished its inaugural project on W. Illinois Ave in Mid-August. The team made repairs to an existing ramp, porch and replaced old steps to the back door. These team projects are supported by neighborhood volunteers who have attended training at Sandhills Community College, and by members of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. They are also helping to fund the projects.

Our volunteer spotlight this month is Danny Batchelor. In Danny’s words, “I’m an aspiring woodworker (pictured with a canoe he built himself), who best enjoys pounding nails under the tutelage of those (thank you, Ed, Keith, and Adam) who know what they are doing with wood. I’m a homeboy who graduated from Aberdeen High School, which was once a two-story building that sat at the corner of U.S. 1 & Elm St. in Aberdeen.
Bert Harrell’s wife, Brenda, is a classmate, and I feel fortunate that Bert invited me to become one of the “Hardcore dudes.” I love it. I hope to one day be able to sink a 16 penny nail in 3 blows.” Danny has been volunteering with Habitat since December 2019 and has a total of 82.5 hours logged in! Thank you for all that you do for Habitat for Humanity!
