From our Executive Director
Gala to Go Hits Goal with Double the Donation Challenge!

Thanks to the generosity of the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and donors who heeded the call to action, the Habitat Gala 2020 met its goal of raising $120,000 to fund an upcoming home for a local family in need.

When plans were forced to change in March, the gala committee quickly adapted and created the best alternative possible for the many supporters eager to continue the work of Habitat even without the usual event. Although they had planned to relax and celebrate their accomplishments during April and May, they instead continued planning for a virtual and “to go” event hosted by the Pinehurst Country Club. The Club did an incredible job in making the event special and it ran smoothly with so many compliments as to the quality of the meals prepared. At the close of the night, the totals were in and were very good despite the change of plans, but had not quite made the goal we had hoped to reach.
The Board of Directors stepped up in their usual fashion to help, issuing a matching challenge to take the event across the finish line. Every dollar raised in the next two weeks following was matched by donations from our Board – a total of $22, 271 was donated and then matched – which brought our net income for the entire event to $122,451! Thank you to an incredible Gala Team, our generous donors and board members, as well as the community that supports each other!

Habitat Family Service Coordinator,
Ellen Harrison, Retires
Longtime friends, families, and homeowners came out to say good-bye to our Homeowner Services Coordinator, Ellen Harrison. She retired from eight years as a Habitat staffer – and among the guests was one of our homeowners who, since purchasing her house in 2018, has battled cancer and is now healthy and has just graduated with her RN degree. As she said to the crowd today “Ellen and Habitat made me feel like I could do anything!” Thanks for making dreams come true for great families in our community – we appreciate you!
We want to hear from you!
Here at Habitat for Humanity, we are committed to creating a culture of appreciation and gratitude for our amazing volunteers. We strongly believe that YOU, our volunteers, are the voices that need to be heard! Please consider taking a few moments to tell us about your volunteer experience and/or for sharing your opinions so that we can improve!

New to Habitat Orientation
June 20th | 10:00 am
Are you new to Habitat? Are you curious about how much it costs to build a Habitat home? Are you interested in volunteering with us in the future? Have you volunteered with us in the past? Here is your chance to find out exactly how everything here at Habitat works, and get your questions answered!
Every third Saturday of the month our volunteer coordinator will host a New to Habitat Orientation. Take advantage of this opportunity to attend this orientation from the comfort of your own home via Zoom or we welcome you to our Habitat Office in Aberdeen.

We strive to make your time a rewarding and beneficial experience at Sandhills Habitat. We value, respect, support, and encourage and enjoy exemplary relationships with volunteers.
Habitat is fortunate to have the devoted hardcore volunteers that make our mission possible. Without the support of community leaders and advocates our impact on affordable housing in the Sandhills would be diminished.

Mrs. Sally Brown has been a longtime volunteer, donor, and leader for over 10 Years. Sally and her late husband, Louis Brown, vacationed in Pinehurst for several years before they decided to make the move from Chicago to Pinehurst. The Brown family has a long history of engaging with the community, supporting education and affordable housing. Sally is an avid golfer and club champion at both Forest Creek and CCNC. Mr. Brown, his son Nick Brown, and Sally have all served on the Habitat Board of Directors at one time or another. Sally also served as the Chairwomen for the Habitat Gala and Auction for two years and rose over $300,000 to be reinvested into the community.

Currently, Sally serves as the Chairwoman for our extremely popular and successful “WomanBuild” committee. In the last two builds Sally lead her team empowering women to help families build strength, stability and independence. We are currently looking forward to a Fall Habitat Home dedication for the Allbrooks family. If you would like to find out how to get more involved with the Women Build, please reach out to Sally Brown at sbrown@sandhillshabitat.org.
Speaking of Women Build...
WOW, have you been by the build site lately? Despite the heat, the rain, and even Covid 19 the house is looking spectacular! It won't be long now before Enjoli and her family will be able to buy this home with a mortgage that she can afford. Enjoli's home is one of the last to be built on Alan Charles Way in the Broadway community behind Aberdeen Elementary. We invite you to stop by anytime and see this incredible energy efficient home!

Many thanks the "Babes" who came out to build this week! Typically, this group would be on the golf course but took off a day to volunteer!
Habitat Repair Program Success
Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills has been awarded $100,000 to support Richmond County by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (“NCHFA”) under the 2020 cycle of the Urgent Repair Program (“URP20”). This program provides funds to assist very-low and low income households with special needs in addressing housing conditions which pose imminent threats to their life and/or safety or to provide accessibility modifications and other repairs necessary to prevent displacement of very-low and low income homeowners with special needs such as frail elderly and persons with disabilities. Kudos to Mark Trudeau for pursuing this grant opportunity!
Homes, Community, Hope & You

This is an unprecedented moment where every one of us has been forced to deeply consider the fundamental importance of home — of having safe, decent and affordable shelter. At the same time everyone is looking for ways to bring light and hope to these challenging times. Our neighbors and our community have been hit hard by the economic shocks of COVID-19.

Our workforce that keeps our hospitality industry going, our hospitals and medical centers functioning, and our grocery stores open are already finding it hard to afford a safe place to live. COVID-19 has revealed its extent — and added urgency. We are at our best when we come together in an hour of need. Together, we can move mountains! We are in need of volunteers, advocates, and organizations that are willing to carry the torch and raise awareness.
