September 2022

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.  In 2022, World Habitat Day (WHD 2022) under the theme "Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind" looks at the problem of growing inequality and challenges in cities and human settlements.  Habitat LA continues to honor World Habitat Day by building homes, communities, and hope throughout greater Los Angeles.

Lights, Camera, Build!

Celebrities help build new homes at Hollywood for Habitat

The 2022 Hollywood for Habitat build, presented by City National Bank, took place this week at our Isabel Villas development in the Willowbrook neighborhood of South LA.  Organized in partnership with the Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity program, the Hollywood Build is an annual fundraising event that brings the entertainment community together to build affordable homes for families throughout Los Angeles.

The star-studded event drew personalities from the worlds of music, sports, film, and television who worked alongside Habitat LA and City National.  Volunteers spent two days in the sun working to build affordable housing. Some of the volunteers included Byron Scott of the Los Angeles Lakers and actors Ashley Fink, Michael Fishman, Kate Linder, Lisa LoCicero, Cecelia Scott, and Alex Rose Wiesel.

Thank you to all of our donors and volunteers for making this build a huge success!

Habitat Hammers Back

Supporting the Hurricane Ian rebuilding efforts

Our hearts have been heavy as we have seen Hurricane Ian wreak havoc in Florida and the Carolinas. Several Habitat affiliates and the communities they serve have been devastated by the storms. We too have watched as residents and rescuers navigate the catastrophic damage and are inspired by the selfless acts of neighbors helping neighbors through the chaos. We know from experience the effects of these storm will take years to recover from, but Habitat for Humanity has 30+ years of experience in disaster relief work and we are ready and equipped to lead a comprehensive, collaborative rebuilding effort that will include clean-up, repairs and new construction once the damage assessment has been done.

Please join us in helping families rebuild their homes and lives. We have set up a donation page through Habitat LA and can ensure that every dollar you donate will directly support Hurricane Ian rebuilding efforts.

Thank you for investing in recovery work as well as the people and communities in the affected areas. Updates will be posted on our website.

Celebrating Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Habitat Ambassador celebrates 98 years!

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter celebrates his 98th birthday on Oct. 1!  The 39th President of the United States continues to devote his life to supporting human rights and public health.

Throughout their involvement with the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter have been tireless advocates, active fundraisers and some of our best hands-on construction volunteers.

The Carters demonstrated their commitment to social justice and basic human rights over and over again during their time in the White House. Their resolve has only persisted since moving on, most notably through the Carter Center in Atlanta. They have also worked on numerous Habitat builds both in the United States and around the world alongside passionate volunteers just like you.

Happy Birthday President Carter! The Carter Center is inviting folks to wish him a very happy birthday on his own online Kudoboard.

For Industry leader Stone Source, Support is Personal!

ReStore donation leads to epic build day

What started out as a generous donation from Stone Source—60 pallets of natural stone pieces and imported Italian porcelain tile—quickly turned into 120 and ultimately, over 300 pallets! But that wasn’t the end of Habitat LA’s connection with Stone Source and parent company Paramount Global Services (PGS). Last month, we welcomed executives, office leaders, and workers from around the country who came to volunteer on our Isabel Villas build site, and for one of those volunteers, it was very personal.
