Episode 1 of Exterminate all the Brutes

"The Disturbing Confidence of Ignorance,"

In the series premiere, "The Disturbing Confidence of Ignorance," filmmaker Raoul Peck sets out to illuminate the intertwined currents of hate and bigotry running through history. Focusing on the United States' legacy as a colonial power, Peck explores how race first became institutionalized, the Nazi program of "elimination" and its antecedents in the West, and the looting of the African continent in a "gentlemen's agreement.

June 16- 10:00 am at the Peace Center

"Panarchy in the Disco: Musings on Interconnectivity and Interdependence"

Sean Dunham will lead a group discussion around the UU 7th Principle: "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence" which also relates to the proposed UU shared values of Interdependence and Transformation. While our culture typically privileges humans over nature, Sean sees it more as a complex of interrelated systems that dynamically integrate people and nature. The discussion will allow us a space to share our thoughts on this topic.

June 18 - Movie Night 6 pm - 8 pm Peace Center

Exterminate All the Brutes Episode 2

"Who the F*** is Columbus,"

In the second episode, "Who the F*** is Columbus," Peck revisits the stories of Christopher Columbus, the Alamo, and the Trail of Tears from an indigenous perspective, showing how "official" history is shaped by those in power and solidified by myth and popular culture. Next, he examines the "doctrine of discovery" used to justify the enslavement of millions of Africans and questions his own story within these narratives.

A message from Nancy Benson and a community volunteer opportunity

I work at Bemidji's "Soup Kitchen" every week as it's my way to "give back" in a social justice way. Bemidji Community Table formerly known as Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen (BCSK) has been serving members of our community with meals for nearly 30 years. Bemidji Community Table organizes four meals a week at two Bemidji area Churches to anyone who is hungry, no questions asked.  It is NOT a church sponsored service. The organization just rents kitchen space from two churches.

The site which needs the most volunteers is the Monday and Tuesday nights which meet at Mt. Zion in Nymore. To sign up for a volunteer shift go to the Community Table website.

Be sure to contact me, Nancy Benson with any questions. Thanks for your consideration!!
