Message from Mrs. Camper

Greetings Husky Families!  August 1, 2024

Welcome to another school year Husky families! Our staff is excited to start this year and welcome your students. In this newsletter, you can find information on parent nights and first days of school. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Did you know at FJSHS, our goal is that every student who graduates from our school is confident in knowing what their next steps are after high school? Whether entering the work force, going to college or vocational school, or entering the military, we strive to give all students the tools to be successful in life. One of our programs that help in this vision, is our internship program. As Juniors and Seniors, students have the opportunity to take part in work based learning to experience their careers of choice.

Please pay close attention to our changes in cellphone regulations that are explained below. We appreciate all the community feedback on how to move forward in the best manner for our students. We look forward to collecting additional feedback and making adjustment as needed.

Please watch the community calendar for information on all the dates coming this month. August is a busy month for parent nights and information coming home to families. Please fill out the free and reduced lunch application and return to the school as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at 719-784-6414 or email to kcamper@re-2.org .

Sincerely,

Mrs. Krissi Camper

SCHEDULE CHANGES

We anticipate that schedules will be available in IC August 1st.

Schedule changes will be available August 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. All other schedule changes must be made preferably before a class begins but no later than 8 days after class begins. Students requesting a schedule change after the first eight days will be required to fill out a Schedule Change Form and have it signed by teachers, parents, counselor, and administrator before any change can or will be made. If approved a WP or WF will be placed on the student transcript for the withdrawn class, no credit will be earned. If an appeal is requested a conference with the administrative team will be required.

Students who are in an inappropriate level of class will have a schedule change made at the teacher's request by the end of the first eight days of the semester. The counselor will make every effort to place the students in an appropriate/requested class. Schedule changes will only be granted for the following reasons:

1. Incomplete or conflicting schedules

2. Errors in sequencing of classes

3. Failure or inadequate grade in prerequisite

4. Medical reasons

5. Grossly imbalanced schedule of academic classes.

“Away for the Day”

Regulating Cell Phone Use at FJSHS

Perhaps you have heard lately that the Jr/Sr high school is looking to implement “Away for the Day” with regard to phones this coming year. “Away for the Day” would bring the expectations into alignment school wide - that phones are away for the entire day.

The “why” is incredibly important here. Asking students to go without phones for the duration of the school day is not simply an academic endeavor. Years of research show a correlation between teen use of phones in schools and a decline in academic outcomes and engagement worldwide.

However, the team that looked into how to approach this change at FJSHS has spent more time discussing the need to reclaim high school as a social experience. We strongly believe — and research supports — that teens are happier when they are interacting with one another off screen. We want students to continue to discuss classroom topics even after the bell rings. These moments are critical to the brain development that happens in childhood and adolescence. However useful phones are, access to them throughout the school day impacts healthy social and academic development. And healthy academic and social development is the core mission of schools.

For more information, please visit the Screenagers Website here.

Cellular Device Guidelines and Procedures:

Students may not use a cell phone, ear buds, or watches that receive phone signals during school time. All of the items listed above can be confiscated if they are visible during school hours.

·        If a student chooses to bring a phone to school it must be switched off and in their bag when the bell rings for the start of period 1 until students leave the classroom at the end of period 7. Teachers will also have locking boxes where students may be asked to store their phones during class. Students will have access to their phones for after school activities and sports.

·        If phones are brought to school, they must be kept in a student’s own school bag. It is important to note that if students do make the decision to bring a phone onto the school grounds, they do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to any phone.

·        If phone accessories including air buds, air pods and headphones are brought to school, they must also remain in bags throughout the school day. Phones should not be connected to smartwatches.

Students who use any of the above items in a classroom, hallway or bathroom will have the item taken away, placed in the office in a secure location, and students will be referred to administration.

If a student gets his/her electronic device confiscated and brought to the office because of inappropriate use the following incidence steps are followed:

1. First Offense: Teacher or administrator will confiscate the cell phone, bring it down to the main office and student will receive the device at the end of the day. Before being allowed to pick up their cell phone, the student must discuss and review the cell phone rules with an administrator.

2. Second Offense: Teacher or administrator confiscates cell phone and turns it into the main office. Parents  will be contacted and informed of the refusal to follow school rules and a parent will need to pick up the device. Students will receive 1 day of ATS.

3. Third Offense: Teacher or administrator confiscates cell phone and turns it into the main office. A parent has to come into Florence Jr./Sr. High School to retrieve the device. The student will receive 2 days of ATS.

4. Subsequent Offense: Parents will be informed that the device will no longer be allowed at school or placed in a locking device or box for the remainder of the school year. Students will face disciplinary action for insubordination, including but not limited to ATS/suspension, which also may result in an administrative disciplinary hearing.

*If a student at any time refuses to give up the device to teacher or administrator he or she will face further disciplinary procedures including but not limited to suspension.

Cell phone use in Florence Jr/Sr High School is NOT a right, it IS a privilege.

What happens if a parent/guardian needs to contact their child? Parents/guardians can contact the school office in the event of an emergency and need to speak immediately to their child. Alternatively, students will have access to their mobile phones at 3:25pm.

What happens if a student needs to contact their parent/guardian? If there is an urgent need for a student to speak with a parent or guardian, they can come to the office to ask for permission to use their phone.

When can my student collect their phone if it has been confiscated?  Students should speak with their dean or Assistant Principal if they have had their phone confiscated.  Depending on the number of infraction, it may be necessary for a parent or guardian to come pick up the phone. Students who have multiple infractions will be placed on a behavior plan.

How long will a mobile phone be confiscated for? In the event a mobile phone necessitates confiscation, this will be returned at the end of the school day or by being picked up by parent or guardian. Students will not leave class early from class to collect their phones.

What if my student has a senior free period or off campus lunch? All students will need to have their phones away while they are at school from the beginning of period 1 till they leave the classroom at the end of period 7. This includes any student who is on campus for a senior free period or internship. Upper classmen who leave school earlier than 3.25pm will need to leave the school site before they can use their phones.

What happens if students are using a smartwatch which is connected to their phones? Smartwatches should not be connected to phones during the school day. If students are messaging on watches in the same way that they are on phones, the device will be treated as a phone.

COLLEGE CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

Florence JSHS offers a variety of programs designed to help students earn college credit. Students should consult with the school counselor for more information regarding each college credit opportunity. FJSHS Requires students to have an cumulative GPA minimum of 2.5 and be a student in good standing. It is recommended that students understand the increased rigor and expectations of a college course. Students will need to complete the combined 4 step application process as required by both Pueblo Community College (PCC) and RE-2 School district to be eligible to receive college credit: 1) Application to PCC, 2)EC or registration form to be completed each semester, 3) Parent signature form returned back to PCC, 4) Completion and return of the District Agreement form to the Counseling Office.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM

The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers college-level curricula to high school students. AP courses follow a prescribed, nationally developed curriculum. Students may receive college credit by earning a qualifying score on the AP exam taken at the end of each course. Students who earn a 2 or higher on a designated mathematics or English test will meet the Demonstration of Competency credit needed for graduation. A $94 examination fee is required for each exam a student takes, financial assistance may be provided.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT PROGRAM

Florence JSHS partners with Pueblo Community College to offer our concurrent enrollment program. College courses are offered both on and off campus for students with the academic and personal readiness to be enrolled in a college course. This program allows students to access college-level coursework while earning dual credit from both FJSHS and Pueblo Community College. Students must meet course enrollment criteria and receive district approval before enrolling in the concurrent enrollment courses. Students should contact their high school counselor to determine readiness and to receive concurrent enrollment course information and application details. All paperwork must be complete and submitted prior to the college enrollment deadlines.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Career & Technical Education (CTE) program is designed to help students choose a career pathway, select relevant courses needed, and build the right skills and knowledge to succeed in a postsecondary environment. All CTE programs are integrated with the academic courses needed to prepare students for postsecondary success. Students who successfully complete a CTE pathway are eligible to graduate with an industry certification.

Mandatory Attendance
Every child who as attained the age of six years on or before August 1 of each year and is under the age of 17 is required to attend public school with such exceptions as provided by law. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure attendance. In cases where students are absent more than the allowed 10 days, parents may see letters coming home from the school requesting a meeting to talk about a plan to increase attendance. Our goal is to work with families to do what is best for students and help them be in school. Please reach out for any further information.

Dress Code
Here at FJSHS, we feel that a dress code should be used as guidelines and help students to learn professional dress for future success in their career pathway.

DRESS CODE
Dress and hair should be neat, clean and appropriate for school. It should not distract from the educational process or be a safety concern. Since every specific item of inappropriate dress and/or appearance cannot be listed, it is the responsibility of the school administration to decide the appropriateness of an item in question.

Dresses, shorts, holes in ripped jeans and skirts must have at least a 3” inseam.
Shoulder straps on shirts must be at least three inches wide and seamed at the sleeves. No halter tops, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, see through, low cut neck lines, spandex, etc. are to be worn at school. No undergarments are to be exposed.

Clothing with inappropriate designs (reference to racism, violence, aggressive/assault behaviors, tobacco, drugs, vulgarities, obscenities, sexual behaviors or death of oneself or others) are prohibited. For example, shirts that depict music groups supporting these kinds of behaviors are not acceptable.
