HRAF celebrates International Archaeology Day 2023
HRAF looks forward to our second annual Archaeology Day celebration later this month. We are pleased to welcome new staff members and also celebrate the retirement of Maureen Sacchetti. HRAF is proud to feature a recent NPR interview on romantic kissing with our membership director Matthew Longcore. HRAF staff members Carol Ember, Michael Fischer, Ian Skoggard, Samantha King, and Matthew Longcore look forward to attending 2023 AAA/CASCA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada.
On Friday, October 20th, HRAF will host an Archaeology Day celebration. Each October, the Archaeological Institute of America and organizations around the world present archaeological programs and activities.

This will be HRAF's second annual Archaeology Day event co-sponsored by the UConn Stamford Anthropology Society.

Students have been invited to New Haven for a day exploring archaeology and cross-cultural research. We will begin our day with coffee in downtown New Haven followed by a tour of the historic Yale University.

Following the tour, the group will visit the HRAF offices. After lunch, there will be a presentation on cross-cultural research from Carol Ember followed by a workshop that introduces archaeology through illustration from Haley Brown. The day will conclude with a visit to the Yale University Art Gallery.

HRAF recently welcomed new staff members:

Haley Brown joins us as our new Office Assistant. Haley received a master’s degree in Archaeological Studies from Yale University.

Louise Toutée is HRAF's new Research Assistant working on a grant project. Louise holds a master’s degree in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology from Oxford University.

Our newest Melvin Ember Interns are:

Isana Raja holds a B.A. in Sociocultural Anthropology and International Studies from the University of California San Diego.

Stefania Becerra Lavado received a B.A. in Anthropology from Arizona State University.

Lastly, we congratulate Maureen Sacchetti who served as our Office Assistant for 20 years, on her upcoming retirement.

The phenomenon of romantic kissing continues to fascinate people around the world. While people in Western societies often take for granted the notion that romantic partners express their desire for one another through open-mouthed kissing, this is not a cultural universal.

Based on the findings of a well-known cross-cultural study, the practice of romantic kissing is conspicuously absent in the majority of world cultures.

HRAF is proud to share that our membership director, Matthew Longcore, was interviewed for a segment on romantic kissing which aired on October 2. The Colin McEnroe Show is a weekly show from a member station of National Public Radio (NPR).

HRAF staff members look forward to attending 2023 AAA/CASCA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada from November 16-18.
The American Anthropological Association (AAA) and the Canadian Anthropology Society (CASCA) combine to make up the world’s largest group of anthropologists.

Four HRAF staff members will be presenting in a panel on Saturday, November 18th at 8 AM. The panel was organized by Ian Skoggard, a research anthropologist at HRAF. The event program can be found here.

HRAF membership director Matthew Longcore will be at Booth 207. Please stop to say hello, learn more about HRAF, and pick up a tote bag.
