EEOC Issues Guidance on Mandatory COVID Testing
in the Workplace

On July 12, the EEOC issued guidance on mandatory COVID-19 testing in the workplace, citing that such testing must be justified based on relation to the job and business necessity, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Employers should consider the following factors:

  • The level of community transmission.
  • The vaccination status of employees.
  • The degree of breakthrough infections of vaccinated workers.
  • The transmissibility of current variants.
  • The possible severity of illness from a current variant.
  • Contacts employees may have with others during the course of their work.
  • The potential impact on operations if an employee enters the workplace with COVID-19.

Employer Resource:
National Suicide Prevention
Hotline Number Changes to 988

Mental health concerns and solutions for an employee, co-worker or loved one can be tough to navigate. Oftentimes, employees have access to mental health treatment through EAPs or other employer benefits. However, sometimes mental health concerns are more urgent and therefore yield more immediate intervention than these traditional resources can provide.

On July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number will change from 1-800-273-TALK to simply 988. Designed to be the mental health equivalent to 911, the new lifeline aims to be easier to remember and access for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.

When someone calls 988, they'll be routed to the closet 988 call center based on their phone number's area code and prefix, regardless of their physical location. For example, someone with a 417-866 number will be routed to Burrell Behavioral Health's Crisis Line in Springfield.

If someone who lives in Springfield - but has a different city's area code - calls 988, they'll be routed to their area code's local 988 Lifeline. They can be asked to be transferred to the Lifeline closest to where they are physically.

The bottom line is, if you or someone you know, including an employee, is in immediate danger, call 911. If you’re needing help with a mental health crisis, suicidal ideation, or substance use support, call 988.

This month, Karla celebrates 4 years with HR Advantage! Karla brings more than 20 years of experience to the HRA team through administrative services and special projects such as employee handbooks and compensation analysis.

We asked Karla about her love for HR and this is what she had to say....

What do you love most about HR?

I love the variety of work and how no two days are ever the same.

What made you choose a career in HR?

When I started in HR, I quickly realized that I enjoyed making a difference in an organization, whether it be finding the perfect person for the job, easing first day jitters for a new employee, obtaining the best benefits for employees, or developing and retaining talent.

Describe a moment that made you grateful to be an HR Professional...

It is a challenge to keep up with changing legislation. There have been several moments throughout the years where I was able to relieve pressure for leadership when laws quickly altered. I was able to help with compliance related to health care reform, minimum wage, Covid-19, COBRA and other employment law areas.

If you had to sum up your job in 5 words, what would they be?

I have the best teammates!
Tight Labor Market Drives Pay Increases for 2023

A Salary Budget Planning Report released by WTW indicates that salary budgets for U.S. employees are projected to increase in 2023, mainly influenced by a labor market with more open jobs than people to fill them. The report found that companies are budgeting an overall average increase of 4.1% for 2023, compared with the average actual 4.0% increase in 2022. These are the largest increases since 2008.

Employers cite concerns over a tighter labor market as the driver for the higher budgets, with nearly three in four respondents (73%) saying this is their top factor. Additionally, 46% cited employee expectations for higher increases that are driven by inflation, and 28% adjusted their budgets in anticipation of stronger financial results.

In addition to salary increases, some employers are pursuing innovative or different ways of addressing the strain of inflation, from introducing a one-time, inflation-offset bonus to allowing a continuance of remote work to alleviate commuting costs
