THREE REASONS CATHOLICS SHOULD VOTE

Our Duty!

Our Responsibility!

Our Adventure!!

Americans will head to the polls in what promises to be an

historic midterm election.

Catholics have a moral obligation to get to the polls.

Below are three reasons

every Catholic

should vote on November 8th.

1. AN ACT OF SOLIDARITY

With every vote we cast, we actively

shape our society and promote the common good.

We have the profound privilege in the United States

of directly selecting our political leaders,

who are to look to us, their constituents,

for direction as they form our public order.

Catholic voters don’t

simply exercise a radical individual right

as if we were all isolated individuals acting for ourselves alone.

We vote in solidarity with all people

including the poor, the unborn, and the most vulnerable.

and

with a well-formed conscience to know the common good

to promote and protect the true dignity of all people

and foster authentic prosperity

If we don’t vote, we fail

to bring the great gifts and wisdom

we have as Catholics to our current culture.

2. THE 4TH COMMANDMENT

“Honor thy father and thy mother”

includes appropriate honor for those in authority.

Americans are under the authority,

not of a king or tyrant,

but of our particular system of government,

with its checks and balances, division of powers,

and elected representatives.

"Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country."
Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2240

By participating in an election, we honor God’s design for our lives.

We accept our responsibility to act in the time and place he chose for us –

the twenty-first century United States of America.

3. SANCTIFY THE WORLD

Voting and political action are particular ways

Catholic laity participate in the Church’s work of evangelization.

When we vote according to our faith and right judgment,

we sanctify the local, state, and national public squares.

Our vote can hold corrupt politicians

accountable for their betrayal.

Elections have very real consequences

for how well a society is able and willing to serve all people,

including the poor and the most vulnerable among us.

God gave us this time, this political moment in which to act.

He is counting on us to use right judgment formed by our faith.

As lay Catholics, we have a duty to vote

and sanctify this great nation.

WHY HAS ATHEISM

INCREASED IN

IN OUR CULTURE?

Measuring atheism is complicated.

Some who call themselves as atheists

also claim belief in some kind of higher power or spiritual force.

At the same time, some who identify with a religion

(e.g., Catholic or Jewish)

say they do not believe in God.

What is certain is...

We've known about the rise of religiously unaffiliated Americans

– many of whom believe in God –

but there is now also a corresponding increase in the number of atheists.

"To argue with a man who has renounced the use of reason

is like administering medicine to the dead."

Harsh words from Thomas Paine,

but are they true of atheists?

Angelo Stagnaro shares his long experience with atheists and he claims

atheists don't deny God's existence... they just hate him.

PRAYER FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY

Oh Lord, who are ever merciful and bounteous

with your gifts, look down upon

the suffering souls in purgatory.

Remember not their offenses and negligences

but be mindful of your loving mercy

which is from all eternity.

Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires

that they may be made worthy to

behold you face to face in your glory.

May they soon be united with you

and hear those blessed words

that will call them to their heavenly home:

“Come, O blessed of my Father,

inherit the Kingdom prepared for you

from the foundation of the world.”

Amen.

QUIZ! FOR THE WEEK

How many canonized saints are there?

Scroll down to find the answer!

100 Points To Get Into Heaven

A man dies and goes to heaven.

St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates.

St. Peter says, "Here's how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you've done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was.

When you reach 100 points, you get in."

"Okay" the man says, "I attended church every Sunday."

"That's good," says St. Peter, " that's worth two points."

"Two points?!" the man says.

"Well, I gave 10% of all my earnings to the church."

"Well, let's see," answers St. Peter, "that's worth another 2 points. Did you do anything else?"

"Two points?! Golly. How about this: I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans."

"Fantastic, that's certainly worth a point, " St. Peter says.

"Hmmm...," the man says, "I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart."

"That's wonderful!" says St. Peter, "That's worth three points!"

"THREE POINTS!!" the man cries,

"At this rate, the only way I get into heaven is

by the grace of God!"

"Come on in!"

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION

The Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year C -  Lk 20:27-38

The Reward of Eternal Life

"Jesus said to them,

'The children of this age marry and remarry;

but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age

and to the resurrection of the dead

neither marry nor are given in marriage.

They can no longer die,

for they are like angels;

and they are the children of God

because they are the ones who will rise.'

  • The Sadducees did not believe in life after death, so they came up with a loaded question based on one of Moses’ commands. They assumed their question required an answer that would make the idea of eternal life look ridiculous.

  • But Christ tells them that “even Moses” taught that the dead will rise: God is not “God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

  • Moses taught eternal life; do did David in the Psalms; so did the Book of Maccabees; so does Christ, which is why Paul does also.

  • Heaven or eternal life is more than a state of never-ending perfect natural happiness in which we will be united with everyone who is good under the loving care of God.

  • As the Catechism puts it, summing up Sacred Scripture, “Those who die in God’s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live for ever with Christ. They are like God for ever, for they ‘see him as he is,’ face to face” (1023). Pope Benedict XII (d. 1342) defined this condition further: these souls “see the divine essence with an intuitive vision, and even face to face, without the mediation of any creature” (CCC 1023).

ANSWER TO QUIZ

The exact number isn’t known.

For the first 1,500 hundred years of the Church, a saint was anyone who died for the Faith or attracted devoted followers after death.

The very first official, pope-canonized saint was

Ulric of Augsburg in 993, but before and after that,

the majority were unofficially recognized and venerated.

It was not until the 17th century that

Pope Urban VIII clarified that only the Holy See had the

authority to canonize a saint.

From that time on, requirements were gradually

added to the canonization process regarding things

such as local veneration and acclaimed miracles.

Such processes are important to guarantee authenticity.

There appear to be about 11,000 recognized saints

(around 1,600 of them officially canonized by the new process)

but no one can say for sure

because no one really kept track of them all for a long time.

By the time the process was established, there were many saints canonized according to the earlier standards.

As for how many saints - canonized or known only to heaven... there are holy men and women who die in sanctity,

but whose lives are hidden—no one on earth would know that

they are now with God in heaven - i.e., Saints!

RECOMMENDATION

We need to be armed for battle!

At all times, and especially during these crazy times in this vale of tears,

we need to lay our foundation in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual reading helps us build and strengthen that foundation.

This week's recommendation is:

Imagine Heaven

by John Burke

One out of 25 Americans

has had a near death experience!

All of us long to know what

life after death will be like.

John Burke compares more than one hundred gripping stories

of near-death experiences (NDEs) to

Scripture's words about our biggest questions of Heaven:

Will I be myself?

Will I see friends and loved ones?

What will Heaven look like?

What is God like?

What will we do forever?

What about children and pets?

Burke shows how the common experiences shared

by thousands of near-death survivors ...

including doctors, college professors,

bank presidents, people of all ages and cultures,

and even blind people

... point to the exhilarating picture of Heaven promised in the Bible.

This thrilling journey into the afterlife

will make you feel like you've been there,

forever changing the way you view the life to come

and the way you live your life today.

You'll discover Heaven is even more amazing than you've ever imagined!

We pray you will be excited to embark on purposeful spiritual reading as a way to build a more prayer-filled, Christ centered life.
