It has been an exciting week for the Honors College and there is much more to come as we approach November...

Stamps Scholars from across the country converge at Purdue

Erica Colarusso, a Purdue Stamps Scholar, made this life-size Scrabble game out of reusable items-- and old bed sheet and cardboard boxes.
The Purdue Honors College brought together 46 Stamps Scholars from across the nation for Igniting Curiosity: A Stamps Symposium this past weekend. The event is only the third conference of its kind for the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation and its partner universities.

The symposium was designed to immerse scholars in a collaborative environment and to foster the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.

Students attended morning break-out sessions and a variety of experiential learning opportunities in the afternoon.   They explored everything from  roller coaster  dynamics to Cabaret theater.

Cooking with the Dean

Looks tasty doesn't it?  Honors College Dean Rhonda Phillips shared some of her caramel apple secrets, cooking with students in the HCRS Community Kitchen.

This is a great time to get to know Dean Phillips, have a chat and enjoy a tasty treat.  If you missed our first "Cooking with the Dean" event, don't worry.  This is a signature program.

You will enjoy seasonal meals hand-prepared by Dean Phillips herself.  Be sure to join us for this delicious form of community-building.  Keep watch in the HNN for our next session.

The first print-run, completed in the HCRS STEAM lab.
Purdue Honors College and CLA launch print laboratory, give new life to old letterpress

The Honors College and the College of Liberal Arts have successfully completed the first print run in a newly-launched print laboratory, housed in the STEAM lab of HCRS.

The colleges brought in national letterpress expert Paul Moxon from Mobile, Alabama to refurbish Purdue's 1959 Vandercook printing press and offer training workshops for students and faculty.  The press had been out of service for many years, having outlived its original use.  Now, students and faculty will use it for publications, artwork and experiential learning.

"The aim is to become a center for various departmental activities," Dr. Peter Moore, of the Honors College said.
"We want to make our space available for courses and clubs across campus.  This will require training a group of students so that they might be able to take on the responsibility of guiding the untrained."

The first item off the press read, "PURDUE PRINTS AGAIN, 10-18-2016, Honors College STEAM Lab."

If you're interested in becoming a Press Technician, or learning more about the project, please email Dr. Kristina Bross at bross@purdue.edu.
