READ THESE COMMENTS FROM EARNIE ELLISON
FORMER DIRECTOR ,BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
FOR THE PGA OF AMERICA. A PIONEER AND LEADER
ON THE FIRST ANNUAL AFRICAN AMERICAN GOLF EXPO
I joined PGA of America in 1997 and attending my first PGA Merchandise Show in 1998. This was one of the most impressive trade shows I had ever seen. With some 13,000 worldwide exhibitors and over 50,000 attendees, your first visit would almost take your breath away. However, what I quickly noticed, with exception of Minority Junior Golf Associations, there were no Black owned businesses displaying and marketing their golf products and services. Neither were there Black owned businesses that could provide support services such as food and beverage, marketing and advertising, printing services, cleaning services, security, etc.
So, I made it one of my personal missions and a PGA of America’s goal to encourage Black owned businesses and organizations such as the National Minority Suppler Development Council, Black Chambers of Commerce, Urban Leagues, and others to attend the PGA Merchandise Show. I felt that exposure would eventually create more participation. We also created a PGA Diverse Supplier Initiative and host Diverse Suppler seminars with golf industry leaders participating to include the PGA of America CEO and Officers.
I am pleased to that similar initiatives are continuing.
However, relative to the PGA Merchandise Show, three of the major challenges confronting Black owned golf companies are:
1.      Cost to exhibit to include exhibit fees, travel, entertainment, etc.
2.      Difficulty for a small golf specific Minority business to get the proper visibility when there are some 13,000 well positioned exhibitors from all over the world
3.      Experience in how to utilize the PGA Show both per, during and post PGA Merchandise Show. I learned that most of the marketing and relationships started months before the PGA Show and the PGA Show is where the final negotiations occur.
For these reasons and many others, to have a more focused effort such as the African American Golf Expo and Forum that will highlight Minority Businesses and the issues and concerns of African American golfers. In my opinion, this will be great for the Minority Businesses, the overall golf industry and Black golf consumers.
Certainly, the concept of a targeted golf show and technology targeting a segment of the market could be a model for the overall golf industry.
