 Meet Your Secretary: David Lubin, MD
|
 Dr. David Lubin was born in Detroit, Michigan and was transplanted as a 6-year old to Hollywood, Florida where he grew up. He went to Tulane University for both undergraduate and medical school and came to Tampa in 1974, where he completed a year of rotating internship, the last year of such in the USF/TGH post grad training program, and a year of medicine before getting the opportunity to join a family practice in S. Tampa. He joined the HCMA in 1977 with a lot more hair than he has today. Dr. Lubin has served 9 terms as an officer on the Executive Council as well as serving as an FMA delegate in the past. He began serving on the editorial board of The Bulletin in 1990 and took over the duties of Art & Cover director in 1991 and Editor in 2001.
As most of you know, Dr. Lubin's hobby is photography, and 2014 will be the 23rd year of his Tampa Bay Events Calendar. Memorial Hospital recently hung over 20 of his photographs in the west wing of the 1st floor for permanent display.
Dr. Lubin has two daughters, Sabrina and Leah and is married to Elke Lubin, HCMA Executive Assistant and Managing Editor of The Bulletin.
When asked why he continues to be so involved in the HCMA, Dr. Lubin responded, "...To make a difference in the lives of my colleagues. For example, being editor of The Bulletin allows me to expound on my ideas and beliefs, in hopes of at least stirring up the pot, start some dialog, and make people think outside the box, since so many of us are trapped inside."

FMA ACA Guide for Patients

AMA HIPAA Compliance Toolkit
The AMA recently announced a new toolkit available at www.ama-assn.org/go/hipaa to help physicians navigate the sweeping new revisions to the federal privacy and security rules for health information that went into effect on Sept. 23, 2013. The Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule last January that revises and extends required safeguards for protected health information established under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
Physicians can turn to the AMA's free toolkit for initial guidance in meeting the new requirements. The toolkit offers practical resources physicians can begin using in their practices.

AMA Launches "FixMedicareNow.org" to Target SGR Repeal
The AMA has embarked on a grassroots campaign that will ramp up this fall to put concerted pressure on members of Congress to once and for all repeal Medicare's Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula for physician reimbursement. An important component of this effort will be an interactive website - FixMedicareNow.org. The site will engage both patients and physicians in the campaign to repeal the SGR, educate policymakers on Capitol Hill on the urgent need to do so, and function as a recruitment tool.
