"Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way. A form of meditation, some form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self."

THE LEARNING CURVE

Troy Day, Author

Although Beryl surprised a lot of us with its stronger than expected winds, it surprised me in another way altogether, it’s been a while since I’ve seen so many boats ride out a storm without anyone ever coming to prep ahead of it. That being said, here are a few things observations, as it’s been a while since we’ve had one bring those winds to the upper coast:

•  Everywhere possible, secure lines to pilings over cleats - saw multiple cleats broken off at base, not pulled out of dock like I’ve seen before

•  Pull outriggers when possible - I’ve seen Cat 1 storms not hurt them ‘rigger one, but this one snapped a handful - storing is challenging, we stowed in a dry stack barn and it worked out great

•  Not everyone adds double lines - throw a line or two on boats around you, it’s in your best interest too

•  High quality dock lines are strong but don’t stretch much, I liked the combination of those and 3-strand nylon, as they have a lot of stretch

As everyone knows, insurance has become a large issue in our industry, and throwing an extra line or 2 on a boat no one checked may not only keep your boat from getting hit by it, in the bigger picture, all these storm losses are only hurting us…….
